NEW DELHI: India today is well-positioned to become a global leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and there is a need to adopt it across all sectors, Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said on Monday. Addressing a virtual FICCI event, Kant further said the government has a crucial role to play in positioning India as the'tech garage' of the world. "India today is well positioned to become a global leader in Artificial Intelligence... We need to adopt AI and accelerate it across all sectors," he said. Kant also said AI has been catalysing leadership in the last few years and it is a game changer. Noting that India has the third largest startup ecosystem in the world, he said, "We have the talent and now data system to build AI ecosystems."

India's digital footprint marks its biggest strength for AI development, and established platforms like Aadhaar, UPI along with massive digital infrastructure create a "unique opportunity" for this futuristic technology to be leveraged to enhance transparency and improve governance, NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said on Friday. Speaking at the closing session of RAISE 2020 Summit, Kant said India optimally leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to solve its developmental challenges will not only lead to a societal transformation within, but will also benefit other nations in the world, who face similar issues. "Data lies at the core of development of AI technologies. India's digital footprint is its biggest strength for AI development," he said. Noting India's digital prowess - humongous amounts of data generated at "cheapest possible cost", rising smartphone penetration and rapid adoption of digital modes of payment -- Kant said, "India's digitisation efforts through platforms such as Aadhaar, UPI, GST, public finance management system and digital infrastructure has created a unique opportunity for AI to be leveraged to increase transparency and improve governance".

PM Narendra Modi's government is expected to launch a national artificial intelligence programme soon. The programme will see the formation of a task force under the leadership of Principal Scientific Advisor K Vijay Raghavan. This force will identify projects and initiatives in which to implement AI technology. Recently, a long-standing clash between government think-tank NITI Aayog and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on which department will anchor the AI project, has ended. Since Finance Ministry has approved NITI Aayog's Rs 7000 crore plan, the much-awaited proposed policy can finally come into existence.

By 2021, digital transformation will add an estimated USD 154 billion to India's GDP, and increase the growth rate by 1 percent annually, according to an IDC study commissioned by Microsoft. The study also predicts that approximately 60 percent of India's GDP will be derived from digital products or services by 2021. With the government's vision of becoming a USD 5 trillion economy by 2024, Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog believes technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) will propel India to achieve that target and even go beyond. "Our ambition should not just be to become a USD 5 trillion economy. Instead, we should aim to become a USD 10 trillion economy in the long run, growing at 9-10 percent year after year for three decades or more, to be able to lift our young population above the poverty line. All of this is not possible without using a large amount of data, AI and Machine Learning (ML) and bringing disruption in a vast range of areas," Kant said during a fireside chat with Anant Maheshwari, President Microsoft India at the Digital Governance Tech Summit 2019 in New Delhi.

Artificial Intelligence is going to transform life of human beings: Amitabh Kant
With several leaders raising concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact, NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant on Thursday said it is going to transform the life of human beings. "The challenge in India is very different to the Western world. We believe AI is going to transform the life of human beings," Kant said here at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting. "How do you provide better data, images to your doctors, how do you track individual students who are not performing well so you can improve learning outcomes. AI needs to be accessed in a very scientific manner for transforming lives of citizens," he said.
NITI Aayog Launches Global Hackathon on Artificial Intelligence - News Chrome
NITI Aayog is partnering with Perlin – a Singapore-based AI start up – to launch the "AI 4 All Global Hackathon." NITI Aayog is inviting developers, students, start-ups and companies to develop AI applications to make significant positive social and economic impact for India. With the vision to further expand the idea of'Artificial Intelligence, AI for All' articulated in the National AI Strategy, NITI Aayog organises hackathons to source sustainable, innovative and technologically-enabled solutions to address various challenges in the development space. The challenge question seeks to develop solutions in Distributed Computing and Privacy Preserving techniques, such as multi-party computation, in AI. The objective of this hackathon is to promote awareness and subsequently develop solutions that deliver the twin benefit of efficient computing to address the infrastructure challenges, while also not compromising on privacy of data for training AI algorithms.

Simulation of human intelligence processes has demonstrated that it can help farmers, artisans and fisherman to substantially eliminate the gap between the price they get for their produce and the market price, said Amitabh Kant, speaking at the AI Startup Conclave organised by leadingindia.ai "AI can help double their income with the same efforts and tools they are using today," said Kant, who was addressing scholars from prestigious institutions and other startup invitees. Leadingindia.ai, is an initiative being supported by NVIDIA, Amazon, edX, Newton-Bhabha Fund, Royal Academy of Engineering, UK, Brunel University and University College, London. Special teams from the government of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat attended the event.
