Now THAT'S what you call fast food! Deliveroo launches a drone delivery service - with takeaways delivered in as little as three minutes

Daily Mail - Science & tech

The next time you order a takeaway, it might be flown directly to your door. Today, Deliveroo has launched its first drone delivery service for customers in Ireland. Drones travelling at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour (80 kph) will carry food from restaurants to customers in as little as three minutes. Upon arrival, the drone will hover above the customer's home and gently lower the food to the ground on a tether before returning to the delivery hub. Launching in Blanchardstown, on the outskirts of Dublin, the trial will cover a 1.8-mile (3km) radius, reaching up to 150,000 people.

Amazon drones may start to deliver packages in Northern California this year

Los Angeles Times

Amazon plans to begin delivering some packages by drone to homes in a few Northern California communities this year, the company said Monday. Residents of San Joaquin County farming towns Lockeford and Acampo, as well as parts of Lodi, will be able to order "thousands of everyday items" online and can expect a drone to drop them in their backyards in less than an hour, said Av Zammit, an Amazon spokesperson. The Amazon Prime Air drones can carry packages that weigh 5 pounds or less -- such as beauty and cosmetic items, office and tech supplies, batteries and household items -- and will typically be the size of a large shoebox, Zammit said. The company is building a facility in Lockeford from which the drones will launch. Though Amazon Prime Air received certification to commercially fly cargo in 2020, it is still seeking approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and county officials for its plans in San Joaquin County.

Amazon has been testing drones for delivering some small packages. Amazon Prime Air has cleared a regulatory hurdle, moving the online retail giant one step closer to dropping packages off at your doorstep with drones. The US Federal Aviation Administration on Saturday issued Amazon Prime Air a "Part 135 air carrier certificate," allowing it to begin commercial drone deliveries in the US. "Amazon Prime Air's concept uses autonomous UAS (unmanned aircraft systems) to safely and efficiently deliver packages to customers," said a spokesperson for the FAA on Monday. "The FAA supports innovation that is beneficial to the public, especially during a health or weather-related crisis."

The multi-level tower allows drones a place to take off and land. Welcome to the drone hive. Amazon has applied for a patent that gives more insight into the infrastructure it may be planning for its drone delivery program, Amazon Prime Air. In this case, the drones would take off, land and pick up deliveries from a tower placed in densely populated cities that would house the drones. It looks a lot like a bee hive.

Amazon Prime Air: 5 Facts About The Company's Drone Delivery System

International Business Times

Amazon announced Wednesday that it had made its first commercial drone delivery. CEO Jeff Bezos revealed in a Tweet that it took 13 minutes from "click to delivery" and that the delivery made to a customer in England is on Amazon's books. Drone deliveries might be in a nascent stage right now, but companies such as Amazon and Domino's have proved with their test deliveries that commercial drone deliveries are a not-so-distant possibility. Drone deliveries take less time than traditional mode of deliveries and seem to be a more convenient way for retailers to make deliveries. Amazon is currently using two of its customers as test subjects, but the company believes that its "Prime Air" service has great potential.
