Overfitting In Contrastive Learning?

Overfitting describes a machine learning phenomenon where the model fits too closely to the training data, resulting in poor generalization. While this occurrence is thoroughly documented for many forms of supervised learning, it is not well examined in the context of unsupervised learning. In this work we examine the nature of overfitting in unsupervised contrastive learning. We show that overfitting can indeed occur and the mechanism behind overfitting.

Air Force showcases how artificial intelligence will help military dominate airspace

Fox News' Greg Palkot provides updates on the Ukrainian military's use of remote controlled drones to advance the counteroffensive. Artificial intelligence working to help protect national security is "here to stay," and the U.S. Air Force is already showcasing how AI can dominate airspace. "We need to recognize that AI is here. It's a powerful tool," Air Force Col. Tucker "Cinco" Hamilton said in a video published by the Air Force Research Laboratory. The AFRL, which is headquartered in Ohio, detailed plans this month on how autonomous drones will act like wingmen to pilots in the future, including training artificial intelligence on the Kratos XQ-58 Valkyrie experimental drone.

Air Force partnership to fuse AI and materials research

Sitting at the nexus of data science, computer vision, and machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI) has the promise to provide insights from large, high-dimensional datasets that can stay otherwise hidden from traditional data analysis approaches. However, its application in materials science has been comparatively slower than some fields due to the specialized knowledge required to apply AI to physical systems, as well as the wide variety of problems and data types encountered. In an effort to push forward the state-of-the-art in materials science research, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) are establishing a collaborative Center of Excellence. The center will leverage the strengths of the two institutions to develop next-generation aerospace materials, establish a pipeline of research talent with both AI and materials science expertise, and advance the materials science field by integrating AI into materials research and design. The 5-year, $7.5M joint Center of Excellence, named Data-Driven Discovery Of Optimized Multifunctional Material Systems (D3OM2S), is supported by an award from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) and the AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate.


Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning are rapidly changing. The materials research community is just beginning to utilize AI and ML in the research process, and it is already clear that this represents a potentially game changing development.

Dr. Benji Maruyama is a Principal Materials Research Engineer in the Air Force Research Laboratory, Materials & Manufacturing Directorate. He is the Leader of the Flexible Materials and Processes Research Team, and leads research on the synthesis and processing science of carbon nanotubes. Dr. Maruyama created and is developing a new method research: Autonomous Research Systems for Materials Development. He is also the point of contact for carbon materials for the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate. His background and interests include carbon nanomaterials, energy storage, field emission, carbon, polymer and metal matrix composites, imaging of complex 3D microstructures and combinatorial experimentation.

While the initiative, called Next Generation Air Dominance(NGAD), has been largely conceptual for years, Air Force officials say current "prototyping" and "demonstrations" are informing which technologies the service will invest in for the future. "We have completed an analysis of alternatives and our acquisition team is working on the requirements. We are pretty deep into experimenting with hardware and software technologies that will help us control and exploit air power into the future," Gen. James Holmes, Commander, Air Combat Command, told reporters at the Association of the Air Force Air, Space and Cyber Conference.
