ai supremacy
In the race for AI supremacy, China and the US are travelling on entirely different tracks Manya Koetse
Of the many events that stand out as noteworthy in online discussions across Chinese social media in 2023, it's perhaps the rise of ChatGPT that will prove to be the most significant. Although the chatbot made by the US-based OpenAI was officially launched in late 2022, it took until 2023 for its unprecedented growth to raise eyebrows in China, where the government has set the goal of becoming the global AI leader by 2030. Over the past decade, the focus on AI in Chinese society and digital culture has grown. Since the Covid-19 outbreak, AI implementations in schools, office buildings and factories have rolled out in fast forward. AI facial recognition is employed in everything from public security to payment technology; smart glasses and helmets make it easier for many workers to perform their tasks; and intelligent robots have become a common sight in China's service industry, in malls, restaurants, and banks. There seemed little doubt over who would win the tech race between the eagle and the dragon; but then came ChatGPT.

Cybercrime, AI supremacy and the metaverse: the tech stories that will dominate 2024
Partway through 2023, I caught up with a respected, high-ranking tech writer at another publication. We gossiped and nattered, and, a bit exasperated, empathised with each other: we were run ragged. The last two years have raised the stakes for what tech journalists do from serving a small niche community to covering stories that have an impact on the wider world. It's also down to the characters involved and what's at stake. Tech journalists have lived on fast-forward since Elon Musk first lodged his bid to take over Twitter – now X – in April 2022.

The Future of A.I. Regulation
While I complain publically about the lack of a governing global body for A.I. regulation that's independent, most BigTech firms pretend like they regulate themselves. Nobody actually trusts that they are doing this properly. The most impressive A.I. and tech regulation I've seen is actually coming out of China. The American narrative on this is that they are anti-capitalistic. I find that attitude interesting.

A.I. Has Helped Humans Know the Family Tree of the Milky Way
Kindly give this article a like or a comment, so I know that you are still reading. I'm a big believer in A.I.'s ability to enable human civilization to become a multi-planetary species. I think artificial intelligence will be critical in enabling us to make this jump in the brief window afforded to us by time and history since the risks of human extinction will become greater in the decades and centuries ahead. I'm always searching and on the hunt for big stories in how A.I. is shaping our understanding of the world and in terms of business innovation. Sometimes however you have to look up.

What is Meta's New AI Supercomputer?
In June last year Tesla unveiled it AI supercomputer. At the time it was the (5th most powerful in the world) to train self-driving AI. It is being used to train the neural nets powering Tesla's Autopilot and upcoming self-driving AI called Dojo supercomputer. Six months later not to be undone Meta has a similar plan. So why are BigTech companies working on supercomputers to train AI? Social media conglomerate Meta is investing around $10 billion a year on the Metaverse, but it needs better AI to power that Metaverse dream as well.
The Secret Auction that Set Off the Race for AI Supremacy
By the time he stepped onto a bus in downtown Toronto for the first leg of a trip to Lake Tahoe in December 2012, Geoff Hinton hadn't taken a seat for seven years. "I last sat down in 2005," he often said, "and it was a mistake." He first injured his back as a teenager, while lifting a space heater for his mother. As he reached his late fifties, he couldn't sit down without risking a slipped disk, and if it slipped the pain could put him in bed for weeks. So he stopped sitting down.

The AI Supremacy: Who Will Take the Lead in this Global Race?
Artificial intelligence is a target for every existing industry Or is it just another hyped innovation? It comes with no surprise how AI today becomes a catchall term that is said out loud in the job market. The US and China are in nip and tuck in the AI race for supremacy. Although China aims to be the technology leader by 2030, the economy is still at a struggle phase with a slowdown and trade war with the US. Emerging trends in artificial intelligence (AI) significantly points toward having a geopolitical disruption in the foreseeable future. As much as the
