AI research centre gets Carl Zeiss backing to unlock "mystery" of machine learning

The Carl Zeiss Foundation is funding the establishment of a new artificial intelligence (AI) research centre in Mainz, Germany, that will focus on determining why modern machine learning methods are so effective. The new Emergent AI Center is being established at the Institute of Computer Science at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), and will receive โ‚ฌ3m over the next three years from the optoelectronics company. A core focus on the AI research centre will be unlocking greater understanding about machine learning, one of the most widely used types of AI that in many fields now matches human-level performance. "Modern machine learning methods allow us to solve many problems using computers which just a few years ago, without doubt, only humans were able to handle successfully," said Professor Michael Wand of the Institute of Computer Science at JGU. "Of course we know exactly how the systems work, but why they work so well remains a mystery." Machine learning advances have occurred due to the development of what are known as deep artificial neural networks.

A Google researcher has highlighted some of the hilarious ways that artificial intelligence (AI) software has'cheated' to fulfil its purpose. A programme designed not to lose at Tetris completed its task by simply pausing the game, while a self-driving car simulator asked to keep cars'fast and safe' did so by making them spin on the spot. An AI programmed to spot cancerous skin lesions learned to flag blemishes pictured next to a ruler, as they indicated humans were already concerned about them. Victoria Krakovna, of Google's DeepMind AI lab, asked her colleagues for examples of misbehaving AI to highlight an often overlooked danger of the technology. She said that the biggest threat posed by AI was not that they disobeyed us, but that they obeyed us in the wrong way.


Cisco and UCL plan to build a ยฃ77m AI research centre

Cisco is set to pump $100 million (ยฃ76.8 million) into building one of the world's largest AI research centres with University College London (UCL), aiming to spur innovation in machine learning, big data and autonomous vehicles. The UK government welcomed the plans, with prime minister Theresa May and digital secretary Jeremy Wright saying the initiative will run hand-in-hand with the government's industrial strategy that aims to generate ยฃ230 billion to the UK economy by 2030. Once build, the centre will house more than 200 academics and researchers, and will train new talent in AI and innovation, digital skills and more as the centre seeks to expand the use of AI to different industries. "The UK has become the natural destination in Europe for the largest and most innovative tech companies to operate and invest," Wright said, according to City AM. "Cisco's strong commitment to the UK highlights we have the ambition, research excellence and regulatory environment for world-leading firms to develop the innovations that will change people's lives for the better." The scheme was unveiled at Downing Street at the end of last week and May described it as a vote of confidence in the government's industrial strategy.


Artificial Intelligence Voice Assistant and IoT Ecosystem

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. announced a few hours back that it will integrate its artificial intelligence (AI) voice assistant Bixby with a wide range of home appliances in order to achieve its vision of establishing an Internet-of-Things (IoT) ecosystem. Headquartered in South Korea, the global leader held a press conference in Seoul demonstrating how consumers can develop their own at-home IoT ecosystem with its AI voice recognition system being integrated into consumer electronics such as television sets, refrigerators, air conditioners, ovens, vacuum cleaners and washing machines. According to Kim Hyun-suk, head of Samsung's consumer electronics division, the integration of AI into home appliances will increase consumer convenience. "As Samsung already declared its AI vision at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in January, we have been trying to make all Samsung-connected devices intelligent by 2020," Kim said.

Last week, the Chinese government announced that it will spend 13.8 billion yuan (US$2.1 billion) on an AI industrial park -- the first major investment in its plan to become a world leader in the field by 2030. But scientists there wonder whether the proposed 55-hectare AI park, in the Mentougou district 30 kilometres away from the city centre, will be able to attract enough researchers. The government wants it to house 400 companies that will make an estimated 50 billion yuan a year developing products and services in cloud computing, big data, biorecognition and deep learning. "I don't see any top talent willing to go to work and live there," says a scientist working at an AI start-up in Beijing, who asked to remain anonymous because the government is sensitive to criticism.


China to build $2 billion AI research centre in Beijing

As reported by Reuters, the project was revealed in an article by China's official Xinhua news agency this week. The research centre will be located towards the west of Beijing, in the city's Mentougou district. The extensive complex will be large enough to house over 400 enterprises developing new AI-based technologies. China expects the facility to be a substantial contributor to the local economy. When it's fully operational, annual output could be up to 50 billion yuan, around $7.7 billion.
