First Complete Map of a Fly Brain Has Uncanny Similarities to AI Neural Networks

Yet, in their own way, fly larvae lead rich and interesting lives full of sensory inputs, social behaviors, and learning. If you've ever doubted that a lot goes on inside a maggot's head, now we have the map to prove to it. An interdisciplinary team of scientists have released a complete reconstruction and analysis of a larval fruit fly's brain, published Thursday in the journal Science. The resulting map, or connectome, as its called in neuroscience, includes each one of the 3,016 neurons and 548,000 of the synapses running between neurons that make up the baby fly's entire central nervous system. Hiding malware inside AI neural networks

A trio of researchers at Cornell University has found that it is possible to hide malware code inside of AI neural networks. Zhi Wang, Chaoge Liu and Xiang Cui have posted a paper describing their experiments with injecting code into neural networks on the arXiv preprint server. As computer technology grows ever more complex, so do attempts by criminals to break into machines running new technology for their own purposes, such as destroying data or encrypting it and demanding payment from users for its return. In this new study, the team has found a new way to infect certain kinds of computer systems running artificial intelligence applications. AI systems do their work by processing data in ways similar to the human brain.


AI Neural Networks Could Soon Train on Smartphones

Deep learning is notorious for being an energy-intensive field that sees its applications limited. But what if these models could be run with higher energy efficiency? That is a question many researchers have asked, and a new team from IBM may have found an answer. New research being presented this week at NeurIPS (Neural Information Processing Systems -- the biggest annual AI research conference) showcases a process that could soon reduce the number of bits needed to represent data in deep learning from 16 down to four without the loss of accuracy. "In combination with previously proposed solutions for 4-bit quantization of weight and activation tensors, 4-bit training shows a non-significant loss in accuracy across application domains while enabling significant hardware acceleration ( 7 over state of the art FP16 systems)," write the researchers in their abstract.
