Cryptocurrency miners are leading the next stage of AI

#artificialintelligence

As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly works its complex magic on one sector of the economy after another, there is an increasingly pressing need for compute resources to power all this machine intelligence. Training a model like ChatGPT costs more than $5 million, and running the early ChatGPT demo, even before usage increased to its current level, costs OpenAI around $100,000 per day. And AI is more than just text generation; applying AI to practical problems across multiple industries requires similar large neural models trained on a diversity of data types -- medical, financial, customer information, geospatial and so forth. Moving beyond the limitations of current neural net AI toward systems with higher levels of artificial general intelligence will almost surely be even more compute intensive. It's only natural that a small but increasing number of crypto miners are now looking at how to leverage their own compute infrastructures to help push forward the AI revolution.

The benefits and challenges of AI network monitoring

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence as part of network infrastructure monitoring has been a popular topic for several years. But only recently has the development of AI network monitoring made it practical to deploy in production networks on a broader scale. With AI network monitoring, the main objectives are to sustain optimal service levels, gain accurate insight into potential infrastructure issues and get that data before business and network operations are affected. To help with this process, machine learning -- a type of AI -- applies algorithms to telemetry and other data streams to gauge a baseline for normal operations. Once the AI network monitoring service establishes that baseline, it can then look for deviations that might indicate a potential infrastructure problem.

The Consciousness of AI

#artificialintelligence

In my experience, one of the biggest opportunities for AI in the field of neuroscience is doing more biologically plausible research and creating a visual perception of the unique features of human cognition. That will lead us in understanding and knowing so much more about the human brain which still is a mystery to a huge extent. This also eventually will lead us to understand mental illnesses, triggers to mental illnesses and the best way to recover from them. Biologically-inspired artificial neural networks and computational neuroscience approaches that attempt to elucidate brain networks are gradually getting closer to experimental neuroscience. However this would definitely require a lot more research and more conversations and collaborations between neuroscientists and AI researchers.

AI Networks Based on Human Brain Connectivity Can Perform Cognitive Tasks

#artificialintelligence

Artificial neural networks modeled on real brains can perform cognitive tasks. A new study shows that artificial intelligence networks based on human brain connectivity can perform cognitive tasks efficiently. By examining MRI data from a large Open Science repository, researchers reconstructed a brain connectivity pattern, and applied it to an artificial neural network (ANN). An ANN is a computing system consisting of multiple input and output units, much like the biological brain. A team of researchers from The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital) and the Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute trained the ANN to perform a cognitive memory task and observed how it worked to complete the assignment.

Outgoing Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) ... [ ] Angel Gurria applauds as new Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Mathias Cormann, of Australia, takes over at the OECD headquarters in Paris, Tuesday, June, 1 2021. A recent study from the Pew Research Center showed that 53% of people in 20 countries feel that artificial intelligence has been a good thing for society. While over half the world's population has a positive view of AI, this means that one in every three people in these countries are concerned about the impacts AI can have on society. How do we ensure that AI is trustworthy and its benefits are shared by all? As the statistics show, while there is incremental improvement, there is still a level of hesitancy and suspicion towards AI among the citizens around the world.
