Enough Talk, ChatGPT--My New Chatbot Friend Can Get Things Done
I recently needed to contact the CEO of a startup called Lindy, a company developing personal assistants powered by artificial intelligence. Instead of looking for it myself, I turned to an AI helper of my own, an open source program called Auto-GPT, typing in "Find me the email address of the CEO of Lindy AI." Like a delightfully enthusiastic intern, Auto-GPT began furiously Googling and browsing the web for answers, providing a running commentary designed to explain its actions as it went. "A web search is a good starting point to gather information about the CEO and their email address," it told me. When given a task like finding a startup CEO's email address, the open source Auto-GPT suggests a plan for approval and can attempt to put it into action. "I found several sources mentioning Flo Crivello as the CEO of Lindy.ai, but I haven't found their email address yet," Auto-GPT reported.

The Role of Heuristics and Biases During Complex Choices with an AI Teammate
Gurney, Nikolos, Miller, John H., Pynadath, David V.
Behavioral scientists have classically documented aversion to algorithmic decision aids, from simple linear models to AI. Sentiment, however, is changing and possibly accelerating AI helper usage. AI assistance is, arguably, most valuable when humans must make complex choices. We argue that classic experimental methods used to study heuristics and biases are insufficient for studying complex choices made with AI helpers. We adapted an experimental paradigm designed for studying complex choices in such contexts. We show that framing and anchoring effects impact how people work with an AI helper and are predictive of choice outcomes. The evidence suggests that some participants, particularly those in a loss frame, put too much faith in the AI helper and experienced worse choice outcomes by doing so. The paradigm also generates computational modeling-friendly data allowing future studies of human-AI decision making.

The AI video game character that influenced an industry
The current wave of virtual assistants owes a lot to a sidekick from one of the most popular video games of all time. The release of Halo: Combat Evolved in 2001 introduced Master Chief's AI partner Cortana, popularizing a lot of the common characteristics that are now shared by real-world AI helpers. Cortana was a friendly, helpful female voice in your ear, one who blurred the line between companion and digital tool. She sounded an awful lot like Siri -- and she did it a decade before virtual assistants became indispensable features of our smartphones and homes. Halo didn't invent the concept of an AI helper.
How and When You Can Access The Biggest Upcoming Google Assistant Features
Google's aptly named AI helper, Google Assistant, is poised to have a great year in 2019. Not only will the digital assistant be spreading to numerous devices old and new, but there are a host of new features coming, too, several of which were shown off at CES 2019 last week. This list of upcoming Google Assistant updates is long, and it can be overwhelming trying to parse out all the different announcements and keep track of when these new features will finally be available. To help, we've curated a rundown detailing the best and most important updates coming for Google Assistant in the next few months, including what devices these new features have been announced for, their expected release dates, and how to enable them (when available). By far, the most hyped new Assistant feature at CES was the Interpreter Mode.

Windows 10 may offer deeper support for AI helpers like Alexa
While you can use voice assistants like Alexa on Windows 10, they still play second fiddle to Cortana. You can't just talk to your computer -- you have to either click a button or use a keyboard shortcut. Thankfully, Microsoft might be a little more egalitarian in the future. Albacore, WalkingCat and others have discovered that Windows 10 test releases may offer deeper support for third-party voice assistants. You could activate apps with a hotword (including when your PC is locked), and possibly "replace" Cortana on a system level.
Microsoft fixes Cortana flaw that let hackers bypass Windows 10's lock screen TheINQUIRER
MICROSOFT HAS PATCHED a flaw in its Cortana virtual assistant that could enable hackers to bypass the lock screen on Windows 10 machines. The fix included in Microsoft's latest Patch Tuesday bug fix bundle, which comprises 12 updates intended to patch a total of 49 security vulnerabilities. This includes fixes for flaws in Windows, Office, SharePoint, and the Internet Explorer and Edge web browsers, along with a patch for the so-called'elevation of privilege vulnerability' in Microsoft's AI helper. Lane Thames, a senior security researcher at Tripwire, spoke out about the long-standing flaw with Cortana, that meant the AI helper was always listening for commands, even when a PC is locked. "The advisory states that'Cortana retrieves data from user input services without consideration for status'," said Thames.
Google Assistant wants to talk to you like a friend--and call in your dinner reservation
Google Assistant may have debuted as a bonus feature in the company's ho-hum Allo messaging app, but it's been on a roll ever since. The AI helper is now embedded in more than 500 million devices worldwide, Google revealed Tuesday during its annual I/O developer conference keynote. The company is rolling out new features and products to make Assistant more helpful no matter what sort of device you use--and to keep pace with Amazon Echo's fast and furious improvements. And get this: In the future, Google Assistant will even call local businesses to book appointments for you. Google's machine learning chops have advanced far enough that you'll be able to ask Assistant to schedule an appointment for you at a business that can't be easily booked online, and Google's big brains in the sky will actually ring local shops to set up a reservation.
In Russia, There's an AI Helper That Makes Fun of You--and It's Wildly Popular
Many in Russia, in fact, seem to prefer their AI helpers with sass and a dark sense of humor. The Moscow-based tech giant Yandex launched a Russian-speaking personal assistant called Alice this October (pictured above, sans snark). And unlike Siri or Alexa, the program relies less on scripted responses than on what it's learned by consuming conversational data mined from the Web, news articles, and even a little Russian literature. As a result, Alice can respond to a much wider range of queries. However, some of program's responses can be a bit surprising.
