The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG), established in 1994, has a vision: "To be recognised globally for excellence in education, research and innovation, and nurture future leaders, to serve the society at large." Analytics India Magazine got in touch with three IITG professors, namely Ratnajit Bhattacharjee, Siddhartha Pratim Chakrabarty, and Ashok Singh Sairam, to understand IITG's contributions to the burgeoning field of AI and Data Science in India. Professors: IITG faculty members are currently engaged in research activities in different topics in the field of AI and Machine Learning (ML), particularly their applications. Recently, IITG, in collaboration with several other leading institutes and organisations, has submitted a proposal for a Centre of Excellence (CoE) on the topic of Deep Learning for geo-hazards prediction to the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) for possible funding. If this CoE gets established, there will be cutting edge research activities in the application of Deep Learning and the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.

As Women in AI Education Ambassador for Australia Angela Kim told Women's Agenda: AI tech is evolving at the "speed of light", while much about machine learning models can be automated, human must be included in its creation – which means the potential for human bias. Women's Agenda spoke to Charles Sturt University, Associate Professor in Computer Science, Lihong Zheng, who has lectured in mathematics and computer science since 2008. Lihong believes encouraging women to pursue careers in STEM begins in early primary school and continues throughout high school. Lihong started her career at a time when there were even fewer women working in STEM, particularly in Australia. Great mentors and having more women leaders in technology and science make it more accessible for girls to pursue degrees in STEM.

The Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur is launching a new BTech programme in artificial intelligence and data science from the academic session 2020-21. The new undergraduate programme will have courses in computer science, mathematics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and their applications in various domains. According to the institute, students, once opted for the course, will be able to take a specialisation in various areas including visual computing, socio-digital realities, language technologies, robotics, and artificial intelligence and others. In IIT-Jodhpur's official release, it has been mentioned that, with the course, enrolling students will also have the option to take up MBA (tech) in their fifth year as a dual-degree option in the School of Management and Entrepreneurship. Prof Santanu Chaudhury, Director, IIT-Jodhpur, said that, with the vision of creating AI for everything, "students belonging to the academic programmes in artificial intelligence, data and computational sciences will be part of scientific innovations for addressing local and global engineering and social problems in close collaboration with industry."
