AI Theorist Says Nuclear War Preferable to Developing Advanced AI

#artificialintelligence

The idea of a Cthulhu-esque "shoggoth" AI is a far cry--far, as in, shouting from the bottom of the Grand Canyon to the moon--from even the most advanced AIs that exist today. They are stochastic parrots, as researcher Timnit Gebru has coined them, and they have no independent "mind" to speak of. Still, they pose sub-existential risks that can and must be addressed rationally, and without considering nuclear war. An AI model, with enough plugins, may already have the ability to be assigned a task by a scammer and to take the necessary steps to carry it out, including by manipulating humans. AI-driven facial recognition systems used by police have already put innocent Black people in jail.

Advanced AI can now end global TB crisis

#artificialintelligence

Tuberculosis (TB) is the second deadliest infectious killer, after COVID-19, which claimed 1.5 million lives in 2020 but is now largely under control. Meanwhile, multi-drug-resistant TB remains a public health crisis and a health security threat. The World Health Organization confirms that the COVID-19 pandemic could start to unravel years of progress in the fight against tuberculosis. This is largely a result of disruption to access to TB services and a drop in resources, which has led to a fall in the detection of new cases. Due to restricted access to diagnostics and lockdowns imposed to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, 4.1 million cases went undiagnosed. India was the worst (41%) with Indonesia (14%) and the Philippines (12%) following next.

Advanced AI: Deep Reinforcement Learning in Python

#artificialintelligence

Created by Lazy Programmer Team, Lazy Programmer Inc. This course is all about the application of deep learning and neural networks to reinforcement learning. If you've taken my first reinforcement learning class, then you know that reinforcement learning is on the bleeding edge of what we can do with AI. Specifically, the combination of deep learning with reinforcement learning has led to AlphaGo beating a world champion in the strategy game Go, it has led to self-driving cars, and it has led to machines that can play video games at a superhuman level. Reinforcement learning has been around since the 70s but none of this has been possible until now.

Why Institutional Investors Need Advanced AI

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are not just buzzwords but critical building blocks for software, so much so that automated solutions are fast becoming fashionable. While we are experiencing a great deal of AI disruptions in several industries, the movement is facing a bit of resistance in the investment landscape. Very few asset management companies are ready to fully embrace AI and machine learning, or ML, systems without subjecting them to traditional quant models that have mostly restricted their effectiveness. In this article, we will explore the status of AI in the investment landscape and discuss how institutional investors could get more out of it. The power of advanced AI lies in its apparent capability to thoroughly explore data, find recurring patterns, and make intelligent decisions at a high intensity. If we go by this definition, then there is little or no room for human inputs.

Advanced AI in Brain Imaging Captures Dynamic Mental Illness Markers

#artificialintelligence

In order to better prevent and cure debilitating ailments including Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, and autism, new research at Georgia State University's TReNDS Center may result in early detection. For a recent study published in Nature Scientific Reports, a team of seven scientists from Georgia State University created a sophisticated computer program to sift through enormous amounts of brain imaging data and discover unexpected patterns related to mental health disorders. The brain imaging data were generated using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans, which measure dynamic brain activity by detecting minute fluctuations in the flow of blood. Although exceedingly complicated, brain dynamics are the key to understanding how the brain functions and malfunctions. Functional magnetic resonance imaging resting-state dynamics are noisy, high-dimensional, and difficult to understand.

Petuum and Inception Institute for AI Partner for Advanced AI

#artificialintelligence

Petuum, the creator of the world's first composable platform for MLOps, and the Inception Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IIAI), have agreed to partner on the development of revolutionary AI applications. Petuum has recently announced a limited release of the composable platform, which includes the AI OS, Universal Pipelines, Deployment Manager, and Experiment Manager, for select private beta partners. Through the partnership with Petuum, IIAI's enterprise AI/ML teams will operationalize and scale their applications into production. Founded in 2018, IIAI's mission is to build full-stack AI solutions and operating systems for enterprise businesses and developers. Besides being the research arm for G42, IIAI is also empowering stakeholders with AI applications and incubating new technology at the cutting edge of ML innovation.

Leveraging the Power of Advanced AI to Enhance Fleet Safety - ELE Times

#artificialintelligence

Whether your company has a large fleet or only a few vehicles, fleet safety should always be a top priority. Safety initiatives not only save lives but also have a major impact on your bottom line. Every year, on-the-job highway crashes cost employers an average of $26,081 per crash, $66,119 per million vehicle miles of travel, and $78,418 per injury. To get a sense of how fast these numbers add up, let's say your fleet has 1,000 crashes. Besides the obvious benefits of a safety program, fleets that integrate safety into every part of their business reap a range of intrinsic benefits, like improved accountability across every department, higher morale, better productivity, and increased driver retention.
