Fault Tolerant Control of Mecanum Wheeled Mobile Robots

Mecanum wheeled mobile robots (MWMRs) are highly susceptible to actuator faults that degrade performance and risk mission failure. Current fault tolerant control (FTC) schemes for MWMRs target complete actuator failures like motor stall, ignoring partial faults e.g., in torque degradation. We propose an FTC strategy handling both fault types, where we adopt posterior probability to learn real-time fault parameters. We derive the FTC law by aggregating probability-weighed control laws corresponding to predefined faults. This ensures the robustness and safety of MWMR control despite varying levels of fault occurrence. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our FTC under diverse scenarios.


Information-Driven Fault Detection and Identification for Multi-Agent Spacecraft Systems: Collaborative On-Orbit Inspection Mission

This work presents a global-to-local, task-aware fault detection and identification (FDI) framework for multi-spacecraft systems conducting collaborative inspection missions in low Earth orbit. The inspection task is represented by a global information-driven cost functional that integrates the sensor model, spacecraft poses, and mission-level information-gain objectives. This formulation links guidance, control, and FDI by using the same cost function to drive both global task allocation and local sensing or motion decisions. Fault detection is achieved through comparisons between expected and observed task metrics, while higher-order cost-gradient measures enable the identification of faults among sensors, actuators, and state estimators. An adaptive thresholding mechanism captures the time-varying inspection geometry and dynamic mission conditions. Simulation results for representative multi-spacecraft inspection scenarios demonstrate the reliability of fault localization and classification under uncertainty, providing a unified, information-driven foundation for resilient autonomous inspection architectures.


Reinforcement Learning-based Fault-Tolerant Control for Quadrotor with Online Transformer Adaptation

Multirotors play a significant role in diverse field robotics applications but remain highly susceptible to actuator failures, leading to rapid instability and compromised mission reliability. While various fault-tolerant control (FTC) strategies using reinforcement learning (RL) have been widely explored, most previous approaches require prior knowledge of the multirotor model or struggle to adapt to new configurations. To address these limitations, we propose a novel hybrid RL-based FTC framework integrated with a transformer-based online adaptation module. Our framework leverages a transformer architecture to infer latent representations in real time, enabling adaptation to previously unseen system models without retraining. We evaluate our method in a PyBullet simulation under loss-of-effectiveness actuator faults, achieving a 95% success rate and a positional root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.129 m, outperforming existing adaptation methods with 86% success and an RMSE of 0.153 m. Further evaluations on quadrotors with varying configurations confirm the robustness of our framework across untrained dynamics. These results demonstrate the potential of our framework to enhance the adaptability and reliability of multirotors, enabling efficient fault management in dynamic and uncertain environments. Global Task-aware Fault Detection, Identification For On-Orbit Multi-Spacecraft Collaborative Inspection

In this paper, we present a global-to-local task-aware fault detection and identification algorithm to detect failures in a multi-spacecraft system performing a collaborative inspection (referred to as global) task. The inspection task is encoded as a cost functional $\costH$ that informs global (task allocation and assignment) and local (agent-level) decision-making. The metric $\costH$ is a function of the inspection sensor model, and the agent full-pose. We use the cost functional $\costH$ to design a metric that compares the expected and actual performance to detect the faulty agent using a threshold. We use higher-order cost gradients $\costH$ to derive a new metric to identify the type of fault, including task-specific sensor fault, an agent-level actuator, and sensor faults. Furthermore, we propose an approach to design adaptive thresholds for each fault mentioned above to incorporate the time dependence of the inspection task. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method empirically, by simulating and detecting faults (such as inspection sensor faults, actuators, and sensor faults) in a low-Earth orbit collaborative spacecraft inspection task using the metrics and the threshold designed using the global task cost $\costH$.


A novel metric for detecting quadrotor loss-of-control

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming an integral part of both industry and society. In particular, the quadrotor is now invaluable across a plethora of fields and recent developments, such as the inclusion of aerial manipulators, only extends their versatility. As UAVs become more widespread, preventing loss-of-control (LOC) is an ever growing concern. Unfortunately, LOC is not clearly defined for quadrotors, or indeed, many other autonomous systems. Moreover, any existing definitions are often incomplete and restrictive. A novel metric, based on actuator capabilities, is introduced to detect LOC in quadrotors. The potential of this metric for LOC detection is demonstrated through both simulated and real quadrotor flight data. It is able to detect LOC induced by actuator faults without explicit knowledge of the occurrence and nature of the failure. The proposed metric is also sensitive enough to detect LOC in more nuanced cases, where the quadrotor remains undamaged but nevertheless losses control through an aggressive yawing manoeuvre. As the metric depends only on system and actuator models, it is sufficiently general to be applied to other systems.


Exponential Auto-Tuning Fault-Tolerant Control of N Degrees-of-Freedom Manipulators Subject to Torque Constraints

This paper presents a novel auto-tuning subsystem-based fault-tolerant control (SBFC) system designed for robotic manipulator systems with n degrees of freedom (DoF). It initially proposes a novel model for joint torques, incorporating an actuator fault correction model to account for potential faults and a mathematical saturation function to mitigate issues related to unforeseen excessive torque. This model is designed to prevent the generation of excessive torques even by faulty actuators. Subsequently, a robust subsystem-based adaptive control strategy is proposed to force system states closely along desired trajectories, while tolerating various actuator faults, excessive torques, and unknown modeling errors. Furthermore, optimal SBFC gains are determined by tailoring the JAYA algorithm (JA), a high-performance swarm intelligence technique, standing out for its capacity to optimize without the need for meticulous tuning of algorithm-specific parameters, relying instead on its intrinsic principles. Notably, this control framework ensures uniform exponential stability (UES). The enhancement of accuracy and tracking time for reference trajectories, along with the validation of theoretical assertions, is demonstrated through the presentation of simulation outcomes.


Neural Network-based Fault Detection and Identification for Quadrotors using Dynamic Symmetry

Autonomous robotic systems, such as quadrotors, are susceptible to actuator faults, and for the safe operation of such systems, timely detection and isolation of these faults is essential. Neural networks can be used for verification of actuator performance via online actuator fault detection with high accuracy. In this paper, we develop a novel model-free fault detection and isolation (FDI) framework for quadrotor systems using long-short-term memory (LSTM) neural network architecture. The proposed framework only uses system output data and the commanded control input and requires no knowledge of the system model. Utilizing the symmetry in quadrotor dynamics, we train the FDI for fault in just one of the motors (e.g., motor $\# 2$), and the trained FDI can predict faults in any of the motors. This reduction in search space enables us to design an FDI for partial fault as well as complete fault scenarios. Numerical experiments illustrate that the proposed NN-FDI correctly verifies the actuator performance and identifies partial as well as complete faults with over $90\%$ prediction accuracy. We also illustrate that model-free NN-FDI performs at par with model-based FDI, and is robust to model uncertainties as well as distribution shifts in input data.


Fault Detection via Occupation Kernel Principal Component Analysis

The reliable operation of automatic systems is heavily dependent on the ability to detect faults in the underlying dynamical system. While traditional model-based methods have been widely used for fault detection, data-driven approaches have garnered increasing attention due to their ease of deployment and minimal need for expert knowledge. In this paper, we present a novel principal component analysis (PCA) method that uses occupation kernels. Occupation kernels result in feature maps that are tailored to the measured data, have inherent noise-robustness due to the use of integration, and can utilize irregularly sampled system trajectories of variable lengths for PCA. The occupation kernel PCA method is used to develop a reconstruction error approach to fault detection and its efficacy is validated using numerical simulations.


Antifragile Control Systems: The case of mobile robot trajectory tracking in the presence of uncertainty

Mobile robots are ubiquitous. Such vehicles benefit from well-designed and calibrated control algorithms ensuring their task execution under precise uncertainty bounds. Yet, in tasks involving humans in the loop, such as elderly or mobility impaired, the problem takes a new dimension. In such cases, the system needs not only to compensate for uncertainty and volatility in its operation but at the same time to anticipate and offer responses that go beyond robust. Such robots operate in cluttered, complex environments, akin to human residences, and need to face during their operation sensor and, even, actuator faults, and still operate. This is where our thesis comes into the foreground. We propose a new control design framework based on the principles of antifragility. Such a design is meant to offer a high uncertainty anticipation given previous exposure to failures and faults, and exploit this anticipation capacity to provide performance beyond robust. In the current instantiation of antifragile control applied to mobile robot trajectory tracking, we provide controller design steps, the analysis of performance under parametrizable uncertainty and faults, as well as an extended comparative evaluation against state-of-the-art controllers. We believe in the potential antifragile control has in achieving closed-loop performance in the face of uncertainty and volatility by using its exposures to uncertainty to increase its capacity to anticipate and compensate for such events.


Adaptation Strategy for a Distributed Autonomous UAV Formation in Case of Aircraft Loss

Controlling a distributed autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) formation is usually considered in the context of recovering the connectivity graph should a single UAV agent be lost. At the same time, little focus is made on how such loss affects the dynamics of the formation as a system. To compensate for the negative effects, we propose an adaptation algorithm that reduces the increasing interaction between the UAV agents that remain in the formation. This algorithm enables the autonomous system to adjust to the new equilibrium state. The algorithm has been tested by computer simulation on full nonlinear UAV models. Simulation results prove the negative effect (the increased final cruising speed of the formation) to be completely eliminated.
