I built a desktop PC specialized for AI and I seriously regret it

PCWorld

Since AI has diffused into every aspect of the technology sector, I've been more than a little tempted to try my hand at some of AI's cooler applications. That growing temptation finally culminated in me building a desktop PC just for AI -- to try my hand at vibe coding apps just for fun. My budget wasn't that high, so for the build I landed on an AMD Ryzen 5 2400G CPU with a base clock speed of 3.6GHz, and an Nvidia RTX 3090 video card. That combination was validated by my fellow PC builders online as entirely suitable for AI, so I felt confident I was onto a good thing. My new PC worked well for my newest hobby, allowing me to dabble in making simple apps in DeepAgent.

US Marine Corps creates attack drone team as arms race with Russia, China heats up

FOX News

Fox News contributor and Army veteran Brett Velicovich shares insight into the United States' drone capabilities and how it compares to adversaries like Russia and China. The U.S. Marine Corps established an attack drone team earlier this year to respond to the rapid development of armed first-person view (FPV) drone technology and tactics, offering a glimpse into the evolving landscape of modern warfare and how future battles could be fought. The Marine Corps Attack Drone Team (MCADT) will be based at the Weapons Training Battalion, Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia. The FPV drones used will offer squad-level lethality at a range of up to 20 kilometers, nearly 12.5 miles, for under 5,000, compared to more expensive weapons systems with less capability, according to a press release from the service. "MCADT is committed to rapidly integrating armed first-person view drones into the FMF [Fleet Marine Force], enhancing small-unit lethality and providing organic capabilities that warfighters currently lack," said Maj. Alejandro Tavizon, the headquarters company commander at Weapons Training Battalion and officer in charge of MCADT.

Intelligence on Earth Evolved Independently at Least Twice

WIRED

The original version of this story appeared in Quanta Magazine. Humans tend to put our own intelligence on a pedestal. Our brains can do math, employ logic, explore abstractions, and think critically. But we can't claim a monopoly on thought. Among a variety of nonhuman species known to display intelligent behavior, birds have been shown time and again to have advanced cognitive abilities.

Terrifying images reveal what animals could look like by 2100 if gene-editing spirals out of control

Daily Mail - Science & tech

As the power of gene editing becomes more advanced, ideas that once seemed like science fiction are rapidly becoming a possibility. Now, a leading expert on human gene engineering has warned of what might happen if these technologies are not brought under control. From half-rat-half-mouse hybrids to primates with human genes, scientists will soon be able to combine the genes of different animals and humans to create'chimaeras'. But if limits aren't placed on research, scientists may soon go beyond combining existing animals to create new enhanced species and even new types of humans. That means animals and humans in the future could have abnormally boosted growth, powerful new senses, and even radically enhanced intelligence.

Australia has been hesitant – but could robots soon be delivering your pizza?

The Guardian

Robots zipping down footpaths may sound futuristic, but they are increasingly being put to work making deliveries around the world – though a legal minefield and cautious approach to new tech means they are largely absent in Australia. Retail and food businesses have been using robots for a variety of reasons, with hazard detection robots popping up in certain Woolworths stores and virtual waiters taking dishes from kitchens in understaffed restaurants to hungry diners in recent years. Overseas, in jurisdictions such as California, robots are far more visible in everyday life. Following on from the first wave of self-driving car trials in cities such as San Francisco, humans now also share footpaths with robots. Likened to lockers on wheels, companies including Serve Robotics and Coco have partnered with Uber Eats and Doordash, which have armies of robots travelling along footpaths in Los Angeles delivering takeaway meals and groceries.
