Palantir Is Helping DOGE With a Massive IRS Data Project

WIRED

Palantir, the software company cofounded by Peter Thiel, is part of an effort by Elon Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to build a new "mega API" for accessing Internal Revenue Service records, IRS sources tell WIRED. For the last three days, DOGE and a handful of Palantir representatives, along with dozens of career IRS engineers, have been collaborating to build a single API layer above all IRS databases at an event previously characterized to WIRED as a "hackathon," sources tell WIRED. Palantir representatives have been on-site at the event this week, a source with direct knowledge tells WIRED. APIs are application programming interfaces, which enable different applications to exchange data, and could be used to move IRS data to the cloud and access it there. DOGE has expressed an interest in the API project possibly touching all IRS data, which includes taxpayer names, addresses, social security numbers, tax returns, and employment data.

A Disaster for American Innovation

The Atlantic - Technology

Nearly three months into President Donald Trump's term, the future of American AI leadership is in jeopardy. Basically any generative-AI product you have used or heard of--ChatGPT, Claude, AlphaFold, Sora--depends on academic work or was built by university-trained researchers in the industry, and frequently both. Today's AI boom is fueled by the use of specialized computer-graphics chips to run AI models--a technique pioneered by researchers at Stanford who received funding from the Department of Defense. They rely on a training method called "reinforcement learning," the foundations of which were developed with National Science Foundation (NSF) grants. "I don't think anybody would seriously claim that these [AI breakthroughs] could have been done if the research universities in the U.S. didn't exist at the same scale," Rayid Ghani, a machine-learning researcher at Carnegie Mellon University, told me.

"It is mind blowing to be in a car that is fully autonomous," Tomlinson tells Freund. "This reminds me of that scene in Jurassic Park." For the second episode of the video series' second season, Waymo brought in national nonprofit the Autism Society.

Co-op heist game Monaco 2 launches 12 years after the original

Mashable

About a dozen years after the first game, and three years after it was announced, Monaco 2 has finally arrived. The new co-op heist game from developer Pocketwatch Games and publisher Humble Bundle launched on Thursday, April 10 on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series consoles for 24.99. Set in a colorful, isometric world with a cartoony art style, Monaco 2 follows in the silent footsteps of its predecessor with a unique heist-based mission design that can be enjoyed solo, in split-screen, or online co-op with friends. There are several playable characters, each with their own abilities and roles. And as is often the case with heists, things will certainly go wrong.

Ireland's privacy regulator is investigating X's use of public data to train Grok

Engadget

Ireland's data privacy regulator is investigating Elon Musk's X. The country's Data Protection Commission (DPC) said on Friday (via Reuters) that it's opening an inquiry into the social platform's use of European users' public posts to train its Grok AI chatbot. In this case, Ireland handles EU regulation enforcement because X's European headquarters are in Dublin. The DPC said it will probe "the processing of personal data comprised in publicly-accessible posts posted on the'X' social media platform by EU/EEA users." Under Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules, Ireland has the legal muscle to fine X up to four percent of its global revenue.

All the 'Black Mirror' Season 7 Episodes Ranked

WIRED

Every day, the world seems to be slipping further and further into dystopia, with President Donald Trump placing tariffs on islands inhabited by penguins and the country's head of Medicare and Medicaid touting AI-first healthcare. In case you needed an even higher dose of Orwellian anxiety in your life, though, Black Mirror has finally returned for season 7 with six brand new episodes. In its new season, the anthology series about our, shall we say, complicated relationship with technology takes on AI sentience, subscription pricing models, lost loves, high school grudges, and the privatization of health care. It's also got plenty of action, romance, and a heaping helping of tech-era terror. As with any anthology series, Black Mirror has plenty of hits, and also its share of misses, and season 7 is no exception, which only makes it more perfect for ranking.

ChatGPT's GPT-4 model retires soon - some users can continue to access it

ZDNet

When ChatGPT first gained popularity in 2022, GPT-3.5 was the default model. In March 2023, the more advanced GPT-4 replaced it. On Thursday, OpenAI updated its ChatGPT release notes to announce that GPT-4 was being retired from ChatGPT and fully replaced by GPT-4o starting April 30. In the changelog, OpenAI said that GPT-4o consistently outperformed its predecessor in writing, coding, and STEM in head-to-head evaluations.
