US Mint releases Space Shuttle 1 gold coin

The latest variant in the ongoing American Innovation 1 Coin series is available to order through the United States Mint. Selected to represent the state of Florida, the noncirculating legal tender is the third coin released this year and the 28th coin in the 15-year project first announced in 2018. While the coin's front displays the series' Statue of Liberty image, the back shows the shuttle launching above plumes of exhaust.

This network of clocks will be in extremely close synchronisation and provide highly accurate timekeeping around the world. The result is that ACES will be able to test Einstein's theory of general relativity, which says that the passing of time is affected by the strength of gravity, with great accuracy.

Some 3.7 billion years ago, a large object smashed into Mars, leaving the sizeable, 96-mile-wide Gale Crater we see today. When the region's surface rebounded after the powerful collision, it left a central peak, Mount Sharp, which preserves layers of the intriguing, and watery, Mars past. From its perch in the foothills of the 3.4-mile-high mountain, you can see over an expanse of plains, called Aeolis Palus, and beyond that the hilly walls of Gale Crater.
