Research in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Pennsylvania
This report describes recent and continuing research in artificial intelligence and related fields being conducted at the University of Pennsylvania. Although AI research takes place primarily in the Department of Computer and Information Science ( in School of Engineering and Applied Science), many aspects of this research are preformed in collaboration with other engineering departments as well as other schools at the University, such as the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Medicine, and Wharton School.
East Texas State University
This article presents a summary of past and current artificial intelligence research within the Computer Science Department at East Texas State University (ETSU). The Computer Science Department at ETSU offers a master of science degree with an emphasis in artificial intelligence. AI research, both past and present, has been funded by a grant from E-Systems, Greenville Division. Other computing facilities available for artificial intelligence research are four workstations, each providing up to 20 users with LISP and PROLOG interpreters.

Scientific DataLink's Artificial Intelligence Classification Scheme
About a year ago. I was approached by Phoebe Huang of Comtex Scientific Corporation who hoped that I would help devise a dramatically expanded index for topics in AI to aid Comtex in indexing the series of AI memos and reports that they had been gathering. Comtex had tried to get the ACM to expand and update its classification. But was told that ACM had just revised the listing two years ago or so ago, and did not intend to revise it again for a while: even if they did. The revision might require a year or more to complete. Comtex wanted the new classification within six to eight weeks. I agreed to take on the task, thinking it wouldn't be too hard. The major decision I had to make was whether to use the existing ACM index scheme and add to it, or start with a fresh sheet of paper and devise my own. I decided to stick with ACM's top two levels, only adding, not modifying, major headings.
Heuristics: Intelligent Search Strategies for Computer Problem Solving
Optical transport networks based on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) are considered to be the most appropriate choice for future Internet backbone. On the other hand, future DOE networks are expected to have the ability to dynamically provision on-demand survivable services to suit the needs of various high performance scientific applications and remote collaboration. Since a failure in aWDMnetwork such as a cable cut may result in a tremendous amount of data loss, efficient protection of data transport in WDM networks is therefore essential. As the backbone network is moving towards GMPLS/WDM optical networks, the unique requirement to support DOE's sciencemore ยป mission results in challenging issues that are not directly addressed by existing networking techniques and methodologies. The objectives of this project were to develop cost effective protection and restoration mechanisms based on dedicated path, shared path, preconfigured cycle (p-cycle), and so on, to deal with single failure, dual failure, and shared risk link group (SRLG) failure, under different traffic and resource requirement models; to devise efficient service provisioning algorithms that deal with application specific network resource requirements for both unicast and multicast; to study various aspects of traffic grooming in WDM ring and mesh networks to derive cost effective solutions while meeting application resource and QoS requirements; to design various diverse routing and multi-constrained routing algorithms, considering different traffic models and failure models, for protection and restoration, as well as for service provisioning; to propose and study new optical burst switched architectures and mechanisms for effectively supporting dynamic services; and to integrate research with graduate and undergraduate education.

Over the past two years we have started a program of On the theoretical side, Professor Randall Davis has research into the development of VLSI systems. They have introduced a descriptive formalism called OMEGA, which contributes to many of the issues of Traditional automated synthesis techniques for circuit current concern in knowlege representation, and they have design are restricted to small classes of circuit functions for applied it to describe the various structured entities such as which mathematical methods exist. Sussman and his group have developed computer-aided design tools that can be of much broader assistance. Guy L. Steele developed a language to support such programming, Johan de Kleer studied causal and Professor Marvin Minsky has worked on a theory of human teleological reasoning in the recognition of circuit function thinking, which likens the mind to a society of agents and from schematics, and Howie Shrobe has worked on constraint attempts to combine a number of insights from satisfaction and the development of an interactive knowledgebased psychoanalytic, developmental, and cognitive theories of system for substantially supporting VLSI design. Further work by Richard Greenblatt and Dr. Lucia Doyle has studied belief revision via truth maintenance and Vaina develops the idea of thread memory.

Computer-Based Medical Consultations: MYCIN
This text is a description of a computer-based system designed to assist physicians with clinical decision-making. This system, termed MYCIN, utilizes computer techniques derived principally from the subfield of computer science known as artificial intelligence (AI). MYCIN's task is to assist with the decisions involved in the selection of appropriate therapy for patients with infections.
MYCIN contains considerable medical expertise and is also a novel application of computing technology. Thus, this text is addressed both to members of the medical community, who may have limited computer science backgrounds, and to computer scientists with limited knowledge of medical computing and clinical medicine. Some sections of the text may be of greater interest to one community than to the other.
