Sutton's final-day predictions v Sam Tompkins

BBC News

Forget the scrap for survival between Tottenham and West Ham, the real battle on the final day of the Premier League season is humans versus machines. The outcome of the BBC predictions title race has gone to the wire, and BBC Sport football expert Chris Sutton is the only one who can stop AI - Microsoft chatbot Copilot - from taking the glory. With one round of fixtures to go, they are level on outright wins - which is the decisive metric. Sutton is in second place because he has managed fewer tied victories, so he needs another outright win on Sunday to finish top of the table. The BBC readers and the guests have put up a pretty pathetic fight, said Sutton. It is just down to me now.

Mathematicians stunned by AI's biggest breakthrough in mathematics yet

New Scientist

Mathematicians stunned by AI's biggest breakthrough in mathematics yet An 80-year-old maths conjecture that has eluded the world's greatest mathematicians has been cracked by an artificial intelligence model built by OpenAI. The result has stunned experts and is being hailed as a seismic moment for AI's mathematical ability. "This is a problem that I didn't expect to see solved in my lifetime," says Misha Rudnev at the University of Bristol, UK. "It's absolutely a bomb." Tim Gowers at the University of Cambridge wrote that the solution is "a milestone in AI mathematics" in a blog post accompanying the work . "If a human had written the paper and submitted it to the and I had been asked for a quick opinion, I would have recommended acceptance without any hesitation. No previous AI-generated proof has come close to that."

Satellites and AI used to track UK hedgehogs in bid to slow decline

BBC News

Researchers at the University of Cambridge are using satellite data and AI in an effort to slow the decline in Britain's hedgehog population. Using an AI tool called Tessera, which analyses detailed images of the UK gathered from space, experts can precisely determine locations of hedgehog habitats - and where these are disappearing. The resulting maps capture landscapes in minute detail, including down to individual hedgerows, while AI can accurately predict hedgehog-friendly places obscured by cloud cover. Those behind the project hope it will help to shed light not just on where hedgehogs live across the UK, but barriers preventing them from finding food and mates. The researchers say Tessera's outputs can be used to track the impact of new housing developments and other environmental changes on landscapes that could affect hedgehogs over time.

I was never one of those lunatics who went with the no-batting glove look. I respect folks who do it, but I'm not built for that. I needed my batting gloves like I needed air to breathe, and I've always thought I'd be a better golfer if I just sacked up and put on the extra glove. Anthropic to share Mythos cyber flaw findings with global finance watchdog

The Guardian

Anthropic is to brief the global finance watchdog on the implications of its Claude Mythos AI model, whose potential threat to cyber defences has alarmed experts. The US startup will discuss Mythos with the Financial Stability Board (FSB), which is chaired by the governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey. Anthropic has declined to release Mythos publicly after announcing the AI model had advanced capabilities in highlighting previously unknown flaws in IT systems that could be used by hackers. Instead, the company has given access to Mythos to a group of tech companies and banks, including Apple and JP Morgan, to help them identify any weaknesses that the AI model might locate. An FSB spokesperson confirmed the plan, saying the body "welcomes engagement with Anthropic and other firms on emerging and frontier risks to global stability".

What would make the UK a better place to live? A new project aims to find out

BBC News

What would make the UK a better place to live? People across the UK are being urged to share their vision for how their community and country's future should look, as part of a major new research project. The National Conversation is being launched with voice notes submitted by high-profile figures, including former footballer Gary Lineker, Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis, and broadcaster Mariella Frostrup. Participants will be asked to complete a survey carried out by researchers from the University of Oxford and leave a 60-second voice note. AI models will then be used to analyse thousands of responses to map what could bring us together.

Bangaranga! Bulgaria wins Eurovision - but UK comes last

BBC News

Bangaranga! Bulgaria wins Eurovision - but UK comes last Bulgarian pop star Dara has won the Eurovision Song Contest with her pneumatic dance anthem Bangaranga. The 27-year-old topped both the public and the jury vote in a nail-biting conclusion, soaring ahead of Israel in second and Romania in third to score a massive 516 points. Dara was far from a front-runner going into the contest, but her intricate choreography and naggingly catchy chorus helped her eclipse the competition - giving Bulgaria its first ever Eurovison title. The UK, however, continued its run of disastrous results. Look Mum No Computer's song Eins, Zwei, Drei took last place, with one solitary point.
