Google Wants Pedestrians Hit By Self-Driving Cars to Stick Aroundโ€ฆ Literally

TIME - Tech

Google's self-driving vehicles could one day be fitted with a form of adhesive coating on their bonnets to reduce injuries in collisions with pedestrians. The tech giant received a patent Tuesday for a kind of human flypaper that would sit beneath an eggshell-like protective layer on the car's front, the Mercury News reports. "The adhesive layer may be a very sticky material and operate in a manner similar to flypaper, or double-sided duct tape," the patent reads. "The adhesion of the pedestrian to the vehicle may prevent the pedestrian from bouncing off." Google acknowledges that it's not yet possible to guarantee its self-driven cars would not hit pedestrians, according to the News.

Google's Vision of the Future: Convenience With a Cost

TIME - Tech

If opening musical numbers are any indication, Google wanted to make sure everyone knew it was going to be a mind-blowing yet quirky day right from the start. After two years holed up in San Francisco's Moscone Center, Google's annual I/O developer conference kicked off outside on Wednesday, in a white-tented amphitheater on the company's campus in Mountain View. To begin, two musicians, placed in what looked like giant crows' nests, played strings that ran the length of the forum, stretching from their perches to the metalwork above the stage where Google CEO Sundar Pichai would soon appear. The tune was a number by Yann Tiersen, whose jaunty French folk music has found a wide and loving audience through films like Amรฉlie. The video that followed took that vibe and gave it a Four Loko.

It's a voice-activated device meant to be placed in the home that allows for access to Google when your phone isn't nearby. The company also positioned the device as a smart controller for the home during its presentation, saying it's capable of communicating with nearby connected gadgets like smart light bulbs and Nest devices.

Google Is Going to War With Facebook Messenger

Google on Wednesday unveiled a new messaging app with a built-in smart assistant, putting it in a position to compete with services like Facebook Messenger and Microsoft Skype. The app, called Allo, integrates Google directly into messaging threads. For instance, if a friend texts you to invite you out for Italian food, Google will suggest nearby restaurants. From there, you can also choose to book a reservation through OpenTable. It's similar to the way Facebook Messenger allows you to interact with various apps.

Google's Voice Search Just Got a Whole Lot Smarter

TIME - Tech

Google unveiled Wednesday a significant overhaul to its voice search functionality that makes it smarter and more intuitive. The revamped software also has a new name: "Google Assistant." Google Assistant understands language more naturally than standard Google voice search. For example, if a user asks who directed the film The Revenant, that person can follow up with a query like "Show me his awards." The user doesn't have to say the director's name to get the correct answer.
