Artificial Intelligence: A Deadly Love Affair with a Chatbot

Der Spiegel International

The only thing that Sewell was still interested in was his telephone. It was the only way to motivate him, to reach him at all. When his telephone was taken away, he would do his homework, but only to get it back. "It was a constant fight," says Megan Garcia. I had always taught my child: Don't talk to strangers, don't post any photos of yourself on the web, don't share any personal information.

Artificial Intelligence and Deepfakes: The Growing Problem of Fake Porn Images

Der Spiegel International

In San Francisco, meanwhile, a lawsuit is underway against the operators of a number of nudify apps. In some instances, the complaint identifies the defendants by name, but in the case of Clothoff, the accused is only listed as "Doe," the name frequently used in the U.S. for unknown defendants. According to the website's imprint, Clothoff is operated out of the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires. But the company has concealed the true identities of its operators through the use of shell companies and other methods. For a time, operators even sought to mislead the public with a fake image, presumably generated by AI, of the purported head of Clothoff.

MIT Economist Daron Acemoglu Takes on Big Tech: "Our Future Will Be Very Dystopian"

Der Spiegel International

DER SPIEGEL: This is not a problem that is exclusive to today's tech industry. Acemoglu: The tech industry combines it with our current obsession with autonomous machine intelligence, meaning that what we should aspire for is to have machines that are as human-like as possible. This vision is rooted in the work and thoughts of Alan Turing, the brilliant British mathematician who first articulated the Turing Test. That's the benchmark that all AI engineers want to pass. DER SPIEGEL: The test is, roughly speaking, about whether a computer succeeds in deceiving a human to think that it is speaking with another person and not a computer.

Competing Views of the ChatGPT Revolution: "Artificial Intelligence Will Destroy Truth"

Der Spiegel International

Oren Etzioni is an AI researcher, while his father Amitai Etzioni was one of the most important intellectual voices in the U.S. prior to his recent passing. In Amitai Etzioni's final interview, he and his son discuss the dangers of artificial intelligence.

Waiting in the Wings: Drone Maker Bayraktar Seen as Possible Erdoğan Successor

Der Spiegel International

In Libya, Bayraktar TB2 drones helped the official government in Tripoli stamp down an uprising by warlord Khalifa Haftar. In Nagorno-Karabakh, they played a decisive role in Azerbaijan's victory over Armenia, after which autocrat Ilham Aliyev celebrated by presenting footage of drone strikes on video screens in the capital city of Baku. The Ukrainians mainly deployed them in the first months of the war, before Russian air defenses adapted their strategy. The fact that the drones are supplied primarily to countries that are close to the Erdoğan government is conspicuous. Baykar is the flagship of Turkey's defense industry, which has grown tenfold since Erdoğan came to power in 2003.

Kamikaze Killers: Iran's Drones Fly with Western Technology

Der Spiegel International

The same applies to typical aviation instruments, such as the gyro stabilizer, also known as a gyroscope, which enables aircraft to orient themselves in the air. The mechanical gyroscope CAR found in a Mohajer 6 drone resembles one previously documented by the group in a Qasef 1 drone. That model is similar to the Shahed 136 and 131 and also belongs to the loitering munitions category, known casually as kamikaze drones. "The data from the report seems valid and very detailed," Ulrike Franke, a drone expert at the European Council of Foreign Relations in London told DER SPIEGEL. At the same time, the experts also discovered differences to older models. According to the report, some of the drones found in Ukraine had been fitted with more modern technology, such as a software-defined radio that was in a Shahad 136.

Fabrice Leggeri's Resignation: The Final Days of the Frontex Chief

Der Spiegel International

A close parsing of Leggeri's comments in Delphi reveals the broader motifs with which he would seek to defend himself from his critics a short time later. Frontex, he said, is a law enforcement authority and not an immigration agency, not showing much empathy for the women and children that had been abandoned at sea in the Aegean. He wrote something similar in his email to Frontex staff following his resignation. Frontex, Leggeri contended, is to be transformed into a sort of fundamental rights body, with a narrative to that effect spreading "discretely, but efficiently." Such sentiments make it sound as though Leggeri believes in some kind of large-scale conspiracy.

Artificial Intelligence: How High-Tech Tools Are Helping Combat Climate Change

Der Spiegel International

"For example, the algorithm analyzes whether there are protected species in an area before the installation of wind farms and whether the designers need to change their plans," says Léa Manneheut, a data scientist at Sinay. If there are a lot of animals at planned construction sites, the noise pollution during the work can at least be reduced with certain insulation measures. Manneheut and her colleagues at Sinay have observed that companies are also paying increasing attention to environmental and climate aspects for image reasons. "There is growing pressure from the public," she says. Researcher Lynn Kaack of the Hertie School says there is a still a lot of catching up to do in terms of interdisciplinary experts working together.

Yanis Varoufakis: A Former Leftist Icon Turns to Science Fiction

Der Spiegel International

In fact, though, the world that Varoufakis has created feels strangely foreign, partly as a result of the rather essayistic writing style. There are constant references to somebody or something: Plato, Odysseus, futurists or even just the Eurovision Song Contest. It's not always clear what the references are meant to convey. When told that it wasn't particularly easy to read, he says: "My wife also tells me that it was hard to read. She said she loves it, but needed to read it again."

The Challenges We Face Once a Coronavirus Vaccine Is Found

Der Spiegel International

Never before has all of humanity focused so intently on the development of a medical remedy. Never before has so much money been invested in a serum in such a short amount of time. Never before have scientists, pharmaceutical companies and politicians been under such immense pressure to deliver. All that has led to an achievement that few thought possible: the development of a new vaccine within just one year instead of the eight to 10 years it normally takes. It is an unbelievable accomplishment, but it is also a hint as to what is now in store for us.
