Happy Anniversary, AAAI and AI Magazine!
Leake, David B.
It highlights the many voices contributing to AAAI by featuring personal remembrances and visions from many people, including founders of AAAI, presidents who guided the society's development, and others spurring on AI research and applications. While a single issue can only scratch the surface, this special issue clearly illustrates the spirit, accomplishment, and optimism that will drive the next 25 years. It is fitting for AI Magazine to present such a commemoration: 2005 is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the magazine as well. From the beginning, AI Magazine has brought the AI community together to share ideas and advances and to introduce newcomers to the challenges and accomplishments of the field. With circulation that is roughly one quarter international, the magazine serves a worldwide audience.

I'm delighted to bring our readers the news of an exciting resource for AAAI members. AAAI has now completed a major initiative, begun five years ago, to develop a digital library of AAAI publications. The collection now comprises approximately 13,000 papers, including the full set of papers from the AAAI proceedings, papers from other major conferences, AAAI workshop and symposium technical reports, selected AAAI Press books, and the full contents of AI Magazine. This already-extensive collection is a growing resource, with new publications and access methods to be added over time. I encourage readers to visit it at the members' library section of the AAAI web site, www.aaai.org.
In Memoriam: Charles Rosen, Norman Nielsen, and Saul Amarel
Hart, Peter E., Nilsson, Nils J., Perrault, Ray, Mitchell, Tom, Kulikowski, Casimir A., Leake, David B.
In the span of a few months, the AI community lost four important figures. The fall of 2002 marked the passing of Ray Reiter, for whom a memorial article by Jack Minker appears in this issue. As the issue was going to press, AI lost Saul Amarel, Norm Nielsen, and Charles Rosen. This section of AI Magazine commemorates these friends, leaders, and AI pioneers. We thank Tom Mitchell and Casimir Kulikowski for their memorial to Saul Amarel, Ray Perrault for his remembrance of Norm Nielsen, and Peter Hart and Nils Nilsson for their tribute to Charles Rosen. The AI community mourns our lost colleagues and gratefully remembers their contributions, which meant so much to so many and to the advancement of artificial intelligence as a whole.

After outstanding service as Book Review Editor, B. Chandrasekaran has completed his term. His energetic guidance of the book reviews section brought the magazine a rich set of reviews that were always eagerly anticipated, and I would like to thank him for his important contributions. I am delighted to announce that Michael Wellman, of the University of Michigan, has agreed to join the magazine as the new Book Review Editor. I know that the book reviews feature will flourish under his stewardship, and I enthusiastically welcome him to the magazine. I would also like to draw readers' attention to a related addition to the AI Magazine web site (www.aimagazine.org).

One of the roles of AI Magazine is to keep readers informed about the practical impact of AI research. One year ago, articles in the magazine described two robotics challenge domains, RoboCup rescue and urban search and rescue, both designed to promote research related to robotic agents for disaster search and rescue. In the tragic aftermath of the World Trade Center attack, research experiments were replaced by reality as search and rescue robots moved into the field, assisting in the World Trade Center rescue efforts. The current issue includes an article discussing lessons from this experience. For many AAAI members, the first news of the robot rescue efforts came from AI Alert, a AAAI service that distributes selected items from the AI in the News page on AAAI's AI Topics web site.
