Scientists film footage of extremely ancient deep sea creatures

Mashable

A deep sea mission, undertaken by the Ocean Exploration Trust aboard their 223-foot vessel (E/V) Nautilus, recently spotted four nautilus individuals. Creatures similar to these modern-day nautiloids -- swimming mollusks residing in large shells -- have been around on Earth for some 500 million years, evolving much earlier than the dinosaurs. Today, the creatures aren't easy to find. The Ocean Trust explorers have endeavored into the deep sea for 15 years and taken over 1,000 dives with their remotely operated vehicle. But these are the first nautiloids they've spotted.

OpenAI Sora is restricting depictions of people due to safety concerns

Mashable

OpenAI Sora is limiting depictions of real people and taking other strict safety measures to prevent misuse. The video generator, which was announced on Monday as part of its 12 Days of OpenAI event, has all sorts of editing capabilities for users to create and customize AI-generated videos. But there are certain things you aren't allowed to do with Sora, as users soon discovered. According to its system card, "the ability to upload images of people will be made available to a subset of users," meaning most users can't create videos of people based on an uploaded image. Those users are part of a "Likeness pilot" that OpenAI is testing with a select few.

Additionally, users can run python code inside a canvas document, and canvas is also available for custom GPTs. Canvas was introduced in October as a editing tool for writing and coding. It's a notebook interface that sits beside the user's ChatGPT chatbot conversation, which allows users to edit responses and "collaborate" with ChatGPT.

7 wild Sora videos blowing up social media after its launch

OpenAI officially launched Sora on Monday, Dec. 9, and people are already testing its capabilities. The company showed off its AI video generator last year before launching it during its 12 Days of OpenAI series of announcements. It was made available to the U.S. and lots of countries earlier today. Mashable's Cecily Mauran has all the details about the launch. The general idea behind Sora is that, much like a chatbot, you give the AI tool a prompt, and it spits out results.

How to try OpenAIs Sora right now

Mashable

On Monday, Dec. 9, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that users in "most countries" will have access to its AI video generator, Sora -- all you have to do is head to Sora.com and use your ChatGPT account. This was the company's biggest announcement so far in its ongoing 12 Days of OpenAI event, in which it discusses new products every day for the first 12 business days in December. "This is going live today in most of the world," Altman said during the livestream, adding that it won't actually go live in most of Europe or the UK. "If you have an open AI Plus subscription, you get 50 generations a month. If you have an open AI pro, you get unlimited generations in our sort of slow queue mode and 500 normal faster generations. You can also get fewer generations at the higher resolution. And anybody with any account can enjoy the feed."
