Google dropped a ton of AI features at I/O. You can try these ones for free.
Google announced a ton of new products and features at I/O, the company's annual developer conference. We've compiled a full list of everything announced, but in case you heard about that jaw-dropping 250 a month AI Ultra plan, you might be wondering which of this stuff is actually free. Many of the new state-of-the-art tools are bundled into the AI Ultra plan (or the AI Pro plan, which is 20 a month). But for the more casual AI user, Google also has some cool new features you can try right now. The public release of AI Mode in Search was one of the big announcements at yesterday's keynote.
OpenAI taps iPhone designer Jony Ive to develop AI devices
On Wednesday, OpenAI announced that it had acquired the startup of iPhone designer Jony Ive, a big win for the company. Ive's startup is called io, and the purchase price is nearly 6.5 billion, according to Bloomberg, which would make it OpenAI's biggest acquisition to date. The official announcement didn't contain much detail and mostly consisted of Altman and Ive gushing about each other. "Two years ago, Jony Ive and the creative collective LoveFrom, quietly began collaborating with Sam Altman and the team at OpenAI. A collaboration built upon friendship, curiosity and shared values quickly grew in ambition. Tentative ideas and explorations evolved into tangible designs. The ideas seemed important and useful. They were optimistic and hopeful. They reminded us of a time when we celebrated human achievement, grateful for new tools that helped us learn, explore and create...We gathered together the best hardware and software engineers, the best technologists, physicists, scientists, researchers and experts in product development and manufacturing. Many of us have worked closely for decades. The io team, focused on developing products that inspire, empower and enable, will now merge with OpenAI to work more intimately with the research, engineering and product teams in San Francisco."

AI has entered the therapy session -- and its recording you
As generative artificial intelligence becomes embedded in people's everyday lives, one emerging aspect of its use in mental health care is raising complicated questions about professional ethics and patient privacy. A number of companies, like Upheal, Blueprint, and Heidi Health, have begun offering AI-powered tools designed to make therapists more efficient at documenting sessions and completing administrative paperwork. Providers are typically required to record the entirety of their session with a client. While it's ethical for therapists to record these conversations under certain circumstances, it's rarely done outside of professional training and forensic work. Note-taking tools, or "scribes," use AI to analyze the content of a client's conversation with their therapist in order to generate documentation that therapists must submit for a variety of reasons, including for insurance payments and potential quality audits.

Skullcandy Method 360 ANC vs. Bose QuietComfort: Comparing Bose-powered earbuds
In the press release for the Method 360 earbuds, Skullcandy called them its "most advanced audio experience to date." In listening to everything from indie rock, video game soundtracks, and podcasts, I can see why. The Skullcandy earbuds had a balance that matched up easily to other impressive budget earbuds I've tested. Whether I was listening to the Final Fantasy VII soundtrack or a live Daft Punk performance, these earbuds punched above a 100 price point. However, when listening to them side by side with the Bose earbuds, the Skullcandy earbuds felt muffled and muddier (though I wouldn't describe them as muddy on their own).
Welcome to Google AI Mode! Everything is fine.
If the AI lovefest of Google I/O 2025 were a TV show, you might be tempted to call it It's Always Sunny in Mountain View. But here's a better sitcom analogy for the event that added AI Mode to all U.S. search results, whether we want it or not. It's The Good Place, in which our late heroes are repeatedly assured that they've gone to a better world. A place where everything is fine, all is as it seems, and search quality just keeps getting better. Don't worry about ever-present and increasing AI hallucinations here in the Good Place, where the word "hallucination" isn't even used.
