United States President Donald Trump will undertake a three-day tour of the Gulf for his first state visit since retaking office in January. The trip begins in Saudi Arabia, followed by Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. It marks Trump's second foreign visit as president after he attended Pope Francis's funeral in Rome in April. Trump will fly out of the US on Monday and start his trip in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on Tuesday. He is expected to attend a Gulf summit in the city on Wednesday, visit Qatar later that day and conclude his visit in the UAE on Thursday.

Since returning to the White House, US President Donald Trump has touted corporate and foreign US investment announcements as proof he is ushering in "the golden age of America". On January 21, Trump said that before he'd finished the "first full business day" of his second term, the United States had "already secured nearly 3 trillion of new investments". On April 2, he said, "It looks like we're going to have about 6 trillion of investments". Six days later, Trump told National Republican Congressional Committee Dinner attendees that the investment total was "now revised up to about 7 (trillion)". During an April 30 NewsNation town hall, Trump speculated that "it could be more than 8 trillion".

Pope Leo XIV has held his first meeting with the world's cardinals since his election as the head of the Catholic Church, identifying artificial intelligence (AI) as one of the most crucial issues facing humanity. Leo, the first American pope, laid out a vision of his papacy at the Vatican on Saturday, telling the cardinals who elected him that AI poses challenges to defending "human dignity, justice and labour" – a view shared with his predecessor, the late Pope Francis. Explaining his choice of name, the pontiff said he identified with the late Leo XIII, who had defended workers' rights during his 1878-1903 papacy at the dawn of the industrial age, adding that "social teaching" was now needed in response to the modern-day revolution brought by AI. The late Pope Francis, who died last month, warned that AI risked turning human relations into mere algorithms and called for an international treaty to regulate it. Francis warned the Group of Seven industrialised nations last year that AI must remain human-centric, so that decisions about when to use weapons or even less-lethal tools would not fall to machines.

Russia and Ukraine accused one another of violating a May 8-10 ceasefire that had been unilaterally declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin to coincide with commemorative events marking the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. The Russian Defence Ministry said on Friday that Ukrainian troops had made four attempts to smash through the border into the Kursk and Belgorod regions in the past week. It claimed that Kyiv's troops attacked Russian forces 15 times during the ceasefire. In Belgorod, the local governor said a Ukrainian drone had attacked a government building on Friday. Pro-Russian war bloggers said Ukraine attacked multiple villages in the region, with further "high-intensity fighting" near Tetkino, a village in the Kursk region.

India and Pakistan have been trading drone and artillery attacks in some of the most intense fighting in nearly 30 years. India claims it brought down some of the more than 300 drones launched by Pakistan. Pakistan denies sending the drones but said it shot down 77 Indian drones.

Russia and Ukraine have accused one another of violating a three-day ceasefire as Moscow marked Victory Day by welcoming allies to a grand military parade. Russia's President Vladimir Putin marked the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany on Friday alongside China's Xi Jinping, in an event clearly intended to bolster support for his three-year offensive against Ukraine, which he had unilaterally paused for 72 hours to mark the occasion. "Russia has been and will remain an indestructible barrier against Nazism, Russophobia and anti-Semitism," said Putin, seeking to draw parallels between World War II – or the Great Patriotic War as it is named in Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union – and the Ukraine war. Russia maintains that its February 2022 invasion of its neighbour is a battle against a "Nazi" regime in Kyiv. Ukraine has dismissed that claim as "incomprehensible".

Islamabad, Pakistan – On Wednesday evening, as Pakistan grappled with the aftermath of a wave of missile strikes from India that hit at least six cities, killing 31 people, the country's military spokesperson took to a microphone with a chilling warning. "When Pakistan strikes India, it will come at a time and place of its own choosing," Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said in a media briefing. "The whole world will come to know, and its reverberation will be heard everywhere." Two days later, India and Pakistan have moved even closer to the brink of war. On Thursday, May 8, Pakistan accused India of flooding its airspace with kamikaze drones that were brought down over major cities, including Lahore and Karachi.

Tensions continue to mount as India and Pakistan traded accusations and attacks across their frontier in Kashmir overnight. New Delhi and Islamabad accused one another on Friday of launching drone attacks as well as "numerous ceasefire violations" over the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed territory. The ongoing hostilities have provoked further calls for restraint as the risk of an escalation between the two nuclear powers grows. Pakistan launched "multiple attacks" using drones and other munitions along India's western border on Thursday night and early Friday, the Indian army said, claiming it had repelled the attacks and responded forcefully, although it did not provide details. Islamabad has denied any cross-border attacks and instead accused Indian forces of sending drones into Pakistani territory, killing at least two civilians.

Pakistan's military says it brought down 25 Indian drones over cities including Karachi and Lahore. India says Pakistan had targeted India and Indian-administered Kashmir with drones and missiles that were shot down. The exchanges are fueling fears of a new phase in the ongoing tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

The Israeli military has been altering commercial drones to carry bombs and surveil people in Gaza, an investigation by Al Jazeera's Sanad verification agency has found. According to Sanad, drones manufactured by the Chinese tech giant DJI have been used to attack hospitals and civilian shelters and to surveil Palestinian prisoners being forced to act as human shields for heavily armoured Israeli soldiers. This is not the first time DJI drones have been modified and used by armies. There were similar reports about both sides of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022. At the time, DJI suspended all sales to both countries and introduced software modifications that restricted the areas where its drones could be used and how high they could fly.
