How Adidas is using motion capture to reinvent running shoes
Before becoming a reality, AlphaBounce had to be shaped by ARAMIS, a motion-capture system that helps determine the amount of strain and tension caused by different materials. ARAMIS, which NASA has used to inspect the outer hull of space shuttles, combines high-speed cameras with flexion sensors to gather information at up to 500 frames per second. Since the software maps skin, bone and muscle, it can give Adidas engineers insight into how they should go about designing a more comfortable running sneaker. ARAMIS can visualize the level of comfort on every area of an individual's foot, from the heel to the toes, as well as indicate when the fabric may be getting in the way of performance. "It's a really versatile tool," said George Robusti, senior design director of global running at Adidas, of the ARAMIS system.
Financial Institutions Fears Of Artificial Intelligence
The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) ordered BSI Bank Singapore to shut down recently on 24 May 2016. This serious action is due to their compliance oversight in money laundering which resulted in a criminal case. This is also a stark reminder of the compliance challenges that financial institutions are facing today. They had attracted millions of dollars of regulatory fines in the aftermath of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. A distinguished law firm, Baker and McKenzie, commissioned a survey of 424 senior executives from financial institutions.
8 Ways Apple Is Adding Artificial Intelligence to Your iPhone
Chatbots can order flowers for you on Facebook. An intelligent assistant can schedule a meeting. Now, a new update for your iPhone will be packed with new automations to make our lives easier and maybe even reduce stress, and it won't cost you a cent when it debuts this fall (unless you need to get a new iPhone). This week at a developer conference in California, Apple announced iOS 10 and focused mostly on how to make your phone "think differently" by thinking for you and saving time. There are some brilliant new updates, but here are the ones that impressed me the most and offer the most automation.
Best way to learn kNN Algorithm using R Programming
We'll also discuss a case study which describes the step by step process of implementing kNN in building models. This algorithm is a supervised learning algorithm, where the destination is known, but the path to the destination is not. Understanding nearest neighbors forms the quintessence of machine learning. Just like Regression, this algorithm is also easy to learn and apply. Let's assume we have several groups of labeled samples.
'Black box' no more: This system can spot the bias in those algorithms
Between recent controversies over Facebook's Trending Topics feature and the U.S. legal system's "risk assessment" scores in dealing with criminal defendants, there's probably never been broader interest in the mysterious algorithms that are making decisions about our lives. That mystery may not last much longer. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University announced this week that they've developed a method to help uncover the biases that can be encoded in those decision-making tools. Machine-learning algorithms don't just drive the personal recommendations we see on Netflix or Amazon. Increasingly, they play a key role in decisions about credit, healthcare and job opportunities, among other things.

McDonald's CEO: robots won't replace workers despite tech opportunities
McRobots are not coming to a McDonald's near you just yet, according to Steve Easterbrook, the company's chief executive officer. His comments came two days after one of the fast-food giant's former US chief executives suggested that a minimum wage of 15 an hour could lead to McDonald's replacing its workers with robots. Easterbrook was speaking at the company's annual shareholders' meeting when he said that technology is not likely to lead to "job elimination" at McDonald's. Related: Ex-McDonald's CEO suggests replacing employees with robots amid protests "It's a topic of discussion right now," he said, when asked by one of the shareholders if the higher minimum wage would lead to shift to more automated services. McDonald's is in a service business and "will always have an important human element", Easterbrook said.
Your.MD Launches Doctor Diagnosis on Facebook - eHealth News ZA
Your.MD, a London-based Artificial intelligence (Al)-powered Personal Health Assistant, has launched a new service that enables users to find relevant and trustworthy health services and products called OneStop. Your.MD launched the beta version of its AI Personal Health Assistant in November 2015 on iOS and Android platforms, marking the world's first Personal Health Assistant to offer medical guidance through end-to-end AI, together with Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Your.MD says OneStop is the first one-stop-shop in digital health to allow people to take full control of each stage of their health issues from understanding their symptoms to finding the best treatment via a chatbot on Facebook Messenger or WeChat. The chatbot aims to achieve three things: Finding out what's wrong with you, suggesting the most likely solution and then offering both public and private services which can help. "Your.MD is truly revolutionary and can make a seismic impact on the global healthcare system by providing accessible, trustworthy and instant healthcare to everyone with a mobile phone," said Your.MD's CEO, Matteo Berlucchi, in the announcement.
How I found out she was only using me for free dinners and drinks
If you're a man who's tried (or considered trying) online dating, chances are you've worried you might meet a woman looking to use you for a free expensive dinner. It seems trivial in comparison to what women have to worry about when they filter through men on dating sites, but it's still a concern, and it still happens to the best of us. My online dating profile doesn't mention my dad's accomplishments, but in moments of insecurity, I've been known to name-drop in order to keep the woman interested. It's never gone well, and it's never attracted the right women. The women who see me as "Giorgio the teacher" or "Giorgio the writer" have never tried to use me for a free dinner.
Ex-McDonald's CEO says raising the minimum wage will help robots take jobs
A former McDonald's chief executive has warned that raising the minimum wage will spur unemployment as companies will instead employ robots that work for less. "I guarantee you if a 15 minimum wage goes across the country you're going to see a job loss like you can't believe," said Edward Rensi in an appearance on Fox Business Network Tuesday. "It's cheaper to buy a 35,000 robotic arm than it is to hire an employee who's inefficient making 15 an hour bagging French fries." The minimum wage has been a hot topic this spring, with some states and employers deciding to up their minimum wage to 15 an hour in the coming years. California will raise its minimum wage to 15 an hour by 2022.
