The next version of iOS will arrive on Monday, September 14, Apple announced today at its fall iPhone event. That same day, the company will also release iPadOS 27 and watchOS 27 to the public. The operating systems mark the public debut of Siri AI, the company's long-awaited (and oft delayed) overhaul of its digital assistant. Apple partnered with Google to use the company's Gemini models in the training of the algorithms that power Siri AI. In Engadget's early testing of Siri AI, we found the assistant was actually capable of answering complex questions and carrying out multi-step prompts.

Google will buy up to half the electricity produced by one of Finland's nuclear power plants as part of a record €13bn (£11bn; $15bn) investment in the country's AI infrastructure, the company announced. The US tech giant said the package would fund three new data centres, expand an existing site and support energy projects to power growing demand for AI services. This is Google's largest single investment in Europe and a testament to Finland's leadership in responsibly building AI infrastructure, the company said on Wednesday. Google's decision is a clear testament to our strengths, Finland's Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said in a statement. As part of the deal, Google signed a 22-year contract with Finnish utility Fortum to buy up to 50% of the output from the Loviisa nuclear power plant.

PCWorld reports that Microsoft used its Bing Wallpaper app to display full-screen ads promoting Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movie collections on Windows 11 desktops. The ads appear randomly based on user region, exploiting small print that allows Microsoft to show advertisements within wallpapers meant for scenic daily backgrounds. Reddit users expressed strong disapproval, especially given that Microsoft previously acknowledged showing too many ads to its users. Microsoft recently caused a stir among some users with an ad that fills the entire Windows 11 desktop background. It's a wallpaper that ends up on the computer via the Bing Wallpaper app.
