Challenges and Opportunities in Applied Machine Learning

Machine learning research is often conducted in vitro, divorced from motivating practical applications. In terms of advancing machine learning as an academic discipline, this approach has thus far proven quite fruitful. However, it is our view that the most interesting open problems in machine learning are those that arise during its application to real-world problems. We illustrate this point by reviewing two of our interdisciplinary collaborations, both of which have posed unique machine learning problems, providing fertile ground for novel research.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence was pleased to present the 2011 Fall Symposium Series, held Friday through Sunday, November 4โ6, at the Westin Arlington Gateway in Arlington, Virginia. The titles of the seven symposia are as follows: (1) Advances in Cognitive Systems; (2) Building Representations of Common Ground with Intelligent Agents; (3) Complex Adaptive Systems: Energy, Information and Intelligence; (4) Multiagent Coordination under Uncertainty; (5) Open Government Knowledge: AI Opportunities and Challenges; (6) Question Generation; and (7) Robot-Human Teamwork in Dynamic Adverse Environment. The highlights of each symposium are presented in this report.
A Brief Overview of Artificial Intelligence in South Africa

One of the consequences of the growth in AI research in South Africa in recent years is the establishment of a number of research hubs involved in AI activities ranging from mobile robotics and computational intelligence, to knowledge representation and reasoning, and human language technologies. In this survey we take the reader through a quick tour of the research being conducted at these hubs, and touch on an initiative to maintain and extend the current level of interest in AI research in the country.

The Seventh Artificial Intelligence for Interactive Digital Entertainment Conference (AIIDE-11) was held October 11โ14, 2011 at Stanford University, Stanford, California. Two one-day workshops were held on October 11: Artificial Intelligence in the Game Design Process, and Intelligent Narrative Technologies. The highlights of each workshop are presented in this report.

The AAAI 2011 Robot Exhibition

In this article we report on the exhibits and challenges shown at the AAAI 2011 Robotics Program in San Francisco. The event included a broad demonstration of innovative research at the intersection of robotics and artificial intelligence. Through these multi-year challenge events, our goal has been to focus the research community's energy toward common platforms and common problems to work toward the greater goal of embodied AI.
A Perspective on AI Research in India
India is a multilingual and multicultural country that came together less than a century ago. The artificial intelligence community, which gained in strength in the eighties, has had a major focus on research directed towards societal goals of bridging the linguistic and educational divide, and delivers the fruits of information technology to all people. In this article we look at a brief history followed by two examples of research aimed at crossing the language barriers.
