Easter delivery: Cargo ship arrives at space station
The six astronauts at the International Space Station got an early Easter treat this weekend with the arrival of a supply ship full of fresh food and experiments. Instead of the usual bunny, Saturday's delivery came via a swan -- Orbital ATK's Cygnus capsule, named after the swan constellation. The cargo carrier rocketed away from Cape Canaveral on Tuesday night. NASA astronaut Timothy Kopra used the station's big robot arm to grab the capsule, as the two craft soared 250 miles above the Indian Ocean. Four hours later, the capsule was bolted firmly to the complex.

Created by Oakland-based art/technology studio Disc Cactus (or as it's stylized), the app aims to showcase the merits and weaknesses of machine learning technologies in a fun and entertaining manner. One of the developers who worked on the project, Sam Kronik, says that to give your phone a mind of its own it uses the open-sourced neural network Neural Talk introduced by Stanford scientist Andrej Karpathy.
Myo wearable used to control prosthetics
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab (APL) have successfully integrated control of their Modular Prosthetic Limb with a commercially available wearable. Using two Myo armbands - muscle-sensing wearables that are already capable of controlling PCs and drones - the wearer is able to perform muscle actions with their upper arm, which are detected by the armbands and wirelessly transmitted to a nearby computer. The computer then determines the movement that is being attempted and sends a signal to the prosthetic arm to complete the task. Using this system, the test subject was able to demonstrate individual finger control, simultaneous finger control, two degrees of freedom at the wrist, multiple grasps and complete simulated activities of daily living. The success of this system is due in large part to the attachment method of the prosthesis, known as osseointegration.

Machine learning has become the predominant computational paradigm, and in short term it has gone from one successful application to another. However, machine learning is far from a unified field, and many different approaches and techniques are vying for primacy and dominance. Which raises an interesting question: is it possible to find a single all-purpose machine learning algorithm that can successfully tackle all protean problems that are currently being attacked from various angles. This search for this "Master Algorithm" in many respects has the flavor of the search for a unified field theory in Physics.
