Robert Laidlow: Reality Eaters album review

The Guardian

Einstein's field equations, Newton's universal law and artificial intelligence are among the subjects of Laidlow's ambitious orchestral works R obert Laidlow is as at home in the realms of science and technology as he is in the world of classical music. As this NMC debut album demonstrates, his intricate, wildly imaginative work is eminently approachable, even if the core concepts are highly complex. Warp, a terse, 12-minute piano concerto, proposes a musical solution to Einstein's field equations as the intrepid Joseph Havlat boldly goes where no pianist has gone before amid the distorting fabric of orchestral space-time. Strident orchestral lines spiral ever upwards, stretching instruments to their limits, while the piano maintains its course towards a serene conclusion. Handsomely recorded, the BBC Philharmonic and Vimbayi Kaziboni offer vibrantly detailed support. The Piatti Quartet plays Gravity, a harmonically unstable if slightly verbose homage to Newton's universal law that at one point pitches the players into the musical equivalent of a black hole.

Young people in NI to be offered MenB vaccine from 31 July

BBC News

A meningitis B (MenB) vaccination programme targeting young people and university students in Northern Ireland will roll out from 31 July, NI's chief medical officer has said. It follows an outbreak in England earlier this year, in which two people - a university student and a sixth-form pupil - died. The two-dose vaccine will be offered to those deemed most at risk from the infection, including Year 14 students and under-25s starting university or a Higher Education institution for the first time this autumn. MenB is a bacterial infection that can cause serious, life-threatening illness including inflammation of the lining of the brain and blood poisoning (sepsis). It is spread by close contact such as kissing, sharing vapes or drinks, or living in close quarters - like student accommodation - with a person who has the disease.

'Mind-blowing' ancient bones discovery sparked by family holiday

'Mind-blowing' ancient bones discovery sparked by family holiday To play this video you need to enable JavaScript in your browser. A family holiday sparked a series of remarkable archaeological discoveries which one expert says could change what is currently known about Britain's prehistory. John Bolton, an archaeologist, was visiting the 11th Century Pembroke Castle in 2010 when he heard there was a cave beneath it. His interest grew when he discovered that the cave, known as Wogan Cavern, showed little signs of previous excavation - so he badgered Dr Rob Dinnis, from the University of Aberdeen, to take a look. Small digs have since uncovered extremely rare evidence of early humans and animals - including the bones of a hippopotamus which roamed Wales 120,000 years ago.

China's Xi says AI 'should not be a solo performance by a single country'

Al Jazeera

China's Xi says AI'should not be a solo performance by a single country' Artificial intelligence should not be dominated by one country, Chinese President Xi Jinping has said, urging international cooperation on development at a major conference in Shanghai. Chinese AI models are gaining ground on the most powerful offerings from the US, attracting global users with lower costs. But how to govern the booming sector has become a topic of debate amid concerns over the deployment of AI in military combat and its use by hackers or criminals. In his address, Xi spoke of China's role in ensuring equitable access to AI capacity-building for developing countries to prevent the creation of "new historical injustices". To that end, he announced China's plans to cooperate with international bodies, including from Africa, Latin America, Asia and BRICS countries, to provide AI-related opportunities.
