A government watchdog is considering a probe into the Home Office's use of ChatGPT technology to process asylum claims amid concerns over the tools' accuracy and secrecy surrounding their use. The potential probe follows lawmakers and researchers publicly questioning the tools' accuracy and the government's secrecy around their use. The Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration (ICIBI), which monitors the Home Office's management of borders, immigration, and customs, has asked digital rights nonprofit Open Rights Group (ORG) to share more information on the tools as it draws up plans for the topics it will inspect next year, campaigner Sara Alsherif tells WIRED. ORG's findings come from a six-month investigation into the tools, which involved 11 parliamentary questions, two ministerial letters, and 10 public records requests that attempt to pry details from the Home Office, which has withheld details on the tools.

Hot off the release of the iPhone Duo and a big update to the iPad Mini, Apple is looking to keep its momentum going by refreshing the 14-inch MacBook Pro with a faster M6 chip. Thanks to its new processor, Apple says the latest 14-inch MacBook Pro delivers 30 percent faster graphics compared to an M5-equipped model, along with a 25 percent boost to AI workloads. Other improvements include support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 while still offering strong battery life with a runtime of up to 24 hours on a single charge. The M6 chip inside the updated MacBook Pro features a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators in each core, plus a dual 16-core Neural Engine and faster unified memory. In addition to general performance increases, Apple claims the M6's Neural Engine is 1.9x faster than before while "dramatically" accelerating AI tasks such as image generation, super resolution and upscaling.

After unveiling a new iPad mini yesterday, Apple is continuing its staggered "Pro and Tell" product release with the launch of its latest iMac model. Powered by Apple's shiny new M6 processors, it promises a "major boost" in performance and AI capabilities thanks to extra cores and new Neural Accelerators in each core. The M6 first arrived in the Mac mini and Mac Studio, but it's now available in Apple's entry-level iMac desktop machines. As we saw before, the M6 chip offers not only more performance per core, but more cores in total with up to a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU and Dual 16-core Neural Engine. That processor, along with faster 170GB/s memory bandwidth, will make the iMac twice as fast for graphics performance compared to the previous iMac M4 model, accelerating intensive tasks like photo editing and gaming, Apple said. Models start with 16GB of unified memory, with options for 24GB and 32GB.
