He sees it as a return to his roots - a reinvention of the god game - a genre he introduced with Populous in 1989, one where players play as a deity on high, controlling a population's inhabitants as they please. In this new iteration, players are able to build and manage settlements by day, before defending them from attacks at night, with the ability to take control of individual characters at any point. For Molyneux, once voted one of the top game creators of all time, the key idea is freedom - creating systems that respond to player curiosity rather than directing them down a fixed path.

Dimensionality Reduction of Massive Sparse Datasets Using Coresets

In this paper we present a practical solution with performance guarantees to the problem of dimensionality reduction for very large scale sparse matrices. We show applications of our approach to computing the Principle Component Analysis (PCA) of any n dmatrix, using one pass over the stream of its rows. Our solution uses coresets: a scaled subset of the n rows that approximates their sum of squared distances to every k-dimensional affine subspace. An open theoretical problem has been to compute such a coreset that is independent of both n and d. An open practical problem has been to compute a non-trivial approximation to the PCA of very large but sparse databases such as the Wikipedia document-term matrix in a reasonable time. We answer both of these questions affirmatively. Our main technical result is a new framework for deterministic coreset constructions based on a reduction to the problem of counting items in a stream.
Fast Algorithms for Robust PCA via Gradient Descent

We consider the problem of Robust PCA in the fully and partially observed settings. Without corruptions, this is the well-known matrix completion problem. From a statistical standpoint this problem has been recently well-studied, and conditions on when recovery is possible (how many observations do we need, how many corruptions can we tolerate) via polynomial-time algorithms is by now understood. This paper presents and analyzes a non-convex optimization approach that greatly reduces the computational complexity of the above problems, compared to the best available algorithms. In particular, in the fully observed case, with r denoting rank and d dimension, we reduce the complexity from O(r2d2 log(1/ε)) to O(rd2 log(1/ε)) - a big savings when the rank is big. For the partially observed case, we show the complexity of our algorithm is no more than O(r4dlog dlog(1/ε)). Not only is this the best-known run-time for a provable algorithm under partial observation, but in the setting where r is small compared to d, it also allows for near-linear-in-drun-time that can be exploited in the fully-observed case as well, by simply running our algorithm on a subset of the observations.
