Microsoft is looking beyond flash storage and hard drives to handle the seemingly unstoppable demand for cloud storage. Yesterday at its Ignite conference, the company announced Project HSD (via ZDNet), a new research initiative that's exploring how holographic storage could eventually be used for the cloud. And while it may sound far-fetched, the notion of holographic storage has been around since the 1960's. But now, Microsoft thinks it may be possible to use the medium effectively thanks to the rise of smartphone cameras. As the video above explains, holographic storage works by writing and reading data from an optical crystal.

Want to play Halo on your commute or Forza at the coffee shop? Microsoft hopes so, with its newest project aimed at taking the Xbox expanding beyond the traditional home console. Called Project xCloud, the new streaming technology aims to let users play Xbox games wherever they are, including on phones and tablets. After first teasing the project at video-game conference E3, Microsoft says it plans to open the service to "public trials" next year with testing currently underway. Microsoft is hoping to give players a console-like gaming experience even when playing on a phone.

You can now purchase an Xbox One X. Microsoft has opened pre-orders for the upcoming 4K console, which the company describes as "the world's most powerful console". The Xbox One X was officially unveiled in June, and will come out on 7 November. It costs £449, and is claimed to be 40 per cent more powerful than any other console on the market. Microsoft has also launched a special version of the Xbox One X, called the Project Scorpio Edition. Project Scorpio was the One X's codename, and the company wants it to "live on" and enable fans "to celebrate both our heritage and the power and precision that we are bringing into our future". It's exactly the same as the standard Xbox One X, but the words "Project Scorpio" are printed on both the console and the controller, and it comes with an exclusive vertical stand.
