Bio-Inspired Compact Swarms of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles without Communication and External Localization

This article presents a unique framework for deploying decentralized and infrastructure-independent swarms of homogeneous aerial vehicles in the real world without explicit communication. This is a requirement in swarm research, which anticipates that global knowledge and communication will not scale well with the number of robots. The system architecture proposed in this article employs the UVDAR technique to directly perceive the local neighborhood for direct mutual localization of swarm members. The technique allows for decentralization and high scalability of swarm systems, such as can be observed in fish schools, bird flocks, or cattle herds. The bio-inspired swarming model that has been developed is suited for real-world deployment of large particle groups in outdoor and indoor environments with obstacles. The collective behavior of the model emerges from a set of local rules based on direct observation of the neighborhood using onboard sensors only. The model is scalable, requires only local perception of agents and the environment, and requires no communication among the agents. Apart from simulated scenarios, the performance and usability of the entire framework is analyzed in several real-world experiments with a fully-decentralized swarm of UAVs deployed in outdoor conditions. To the best of our knowledge, these experiments are the first deployment of decentralized bio-inspired compact swarms of UAVs without the use of a communication network or shared absolute localization. Learning Responsibility Allocations for Safe Human-Robot Interaction with Applications to Autonomous Driving

Drivers have a responsibility to exercise reasonable care to avoid collision with other road users. This assumed responsibility allows interacting agents to maintain safety without explicit coordination. Thus to enable safe autonomous vehicle (AV) interactions, AVs must understand what their responsibilities are to maintain safety and how they affect the safety of nearby agents. In this work we seek to understand how responsibility is shared in multi-agent settings where an autonomous agent is interacting with human counterparts. We introduce Responsibility-Aware Control Barrier Functions (RA-CBFs) and present a method to learn responsibility allocations from data. By combining safety-critical control and learning-based techniques, RA-CBFs allow us to account for scene-dependent responsibility allocations and synthesize safe and efficient driving behaviors without making worst-case assumptions that typically result in overly-conservative behaviors. We test our framework using real-world driving data and demonstrate its efficacy as a tool for both safe control and forensic analysis of unsafe driving.


Agent mental models and Bayesian rules as a tool to create opinion dynamics models

Traditional models of opinion dynamics provide a simple approach to understanding human behavior in basic social scenarios. However, when it comes to issues such as polarization and extremism, we require a more nuanced understanding of human biases and cognitive tendencies. In this paper, we propose an approach to modeling opinion dynamics by integrating mental models and assumptions of individuals agents using Bayesian-inspired methods. By exploring the relationship between human rationality and Bayesian theory, we demonstrate the efficacy of these methods in describing how opinions evolve. Our analysis leverages the Continuous Opinions and Discrete Actions (CODA) model, applying Bayesian-inspired rules to account for key human behaviors such as confirmation bias, motivated reasoning, and our reluctance to change opinions. Through this, we obtain update rules that offer deeper insights into the dynamics of extreme opinions. Our work sheds light on the role of human biases in shaping opinion dynamics and highlights the potential of Bayesian-inspired modeling to provide more accurate predictions of real-world scenarios. Rate-Optimal Contextual Online Matching Bandit

Two-sided online matching platforms have been employed in various markets. However, agents' preferences in present market are usually implicit and unknown and must be learned from data. With the growing availability of side information involved in the decision process, modern online matching methodology demands the capability to track preference dynamics for agents based on their contextual information. This motivates us to consider a novel Contextual Online Matching Bandit prOblem (COMBO), which allows dynamic preferences in matching decisions. Existing works focus on multi-armed bandit with static preference, but this is insufficient: the two-sided preference changes as along as one-side's contextual information updates, resulting in non-static matching. In this paper, we propose a Centralized Contextual - Explore Then Commit (CC-ETC) algorithm to adapt to the COMBO. CC-ETC solves online matching with dynamic preference. In theory, we show that CC-ETC achieves a sublinear regret upper bound O(log(T)) and is a rate-optimal algorithm by proving a matching lower bound. In the experiments, we demonstrate that CC-ETC is robust to variant preference schemes, dimensions of contexts, reward noise levels, and contexts variation levels.


Optimization of Convolutional Neural Network Using the Linearly Decreasing Weight Particle Swarm Optimization

Convolutional neural network (CNN) is one of the most frequently used deep learning techniques. Various forms of models have been proposed and im-proved for learning at CNN. When learning with CNN, it is necessary to determine the optimal hyperparameters. However, the number of hyperparameters is so large that it is difficult to do it manually, so much research has been done on automation. A method that uses metaheuristic algorithms is attracting attention in research on hyperparameter optimization. Metaheuristic algorithms are naturally inspired and include evolution strategies, genetic algorithms, antcolony optimization and particle swarm optimization. In particular, particle swarm optimization converges faster than genetic algorithms, and various models have been proposed. In this paper, we pro-pose CNN hyperparameter optimization with linearly decreasing weight particle swarm optimization (LDWPSO). In the experiment, the MNIST data set and CIFAR-10 data set, which are often used as benchmark data sets, are used. By opti-mizing CNN hyperparameters with LDWPSO, learning the MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets, we compare the accuracy with a standard CNN based on LeNet-5. As a result, when using the MNIST dataset, the baseline CNN is 94.02% at the 5th epoch, compared to 98.95% for LDWPSO CNN, which improves accuracy. When using the CIFAR-10 dataset, the Baseline CNN is 28.07% at the 10th epoch, compared to 69.37% for the LDWPSO CNN, which greatly improves accuracy. D-HAL: Distributed Hierarchical Adversarial Learning for Multi-Agent Interaction in Autonomous Intersection Management

Autonomous Intersection Management (AIM) provides a signal-free intersection scheduling paradigm for Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs). Distributed learning method has emerged as an attractive branch of AIM research. Compared with centralized AIM, distributed AIM can be deployed to CAVs at a lower cost, and compared with rule-based and optimization-based method, learning-based method can treat various complicated real-time intersection scenarios more flexibly. Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is the mainstream approach in distributed learning to address AIM problems. However, the large-scale simultaneous interactive decision of multiple agents and the rapid changes of environment caused by interactions pose challenges for DRL, making its reward curve oscillating and hard to converge, and ultimately leading to a compromise in safety and computing efficiency. For this, we propose a non-RL learning framework, called Distributed Hierarchical Adversarial Learning (D-HAL). The framework includes an actor network that generates the actions of each CAV at each step. The immediate discriminator evaluates the interaction performance of the actor network at the current step, while the final discriminator makes the final evaluation of the overall trajectory from a series of interactions. In this framework, the long-term outcome of the behavior no longer motivates the actor network in terms of discounted rewards, but rather through a designed adversarial loss function with discriminative labels. The proposed model is evaluated at a four-way-six-lane intersection, and outperforms several state-of-the-art methods on ensuring safety and reducing travel time.


Methods and Mechanisms for Interactive Novelty Handling in Adversarial Environments

TrafficGen: Learning to Generate Diverse and Realistic Traffic Scenarios

Diverse and realistic traffic scenarios are crucial for evaluating the AI safety of autonomous driving systems in simulation. This work introduces a data-driven method called TrafficGen for traffic scenario generation. It learns from the fragmented human driving data collected in the real world and then can generate realistic traffic scenarios. TrafficGen is an autoregressive generative model with an encoder-decoder architecture. In each autoregressive iteration, it first encodes the current traffic context with the attention mechanism and then decodes a vehicle's initial state followed by generating its long trajectory. We evaluate the trained model in terms of vehicle placement and trajectories and show substantial improvements over baselines. TrafficGen can be also used to augment existing traffic scenarios, by adding new vehicles and extending the fragmented trajectories. We further demonstrate that importing the generated scenarios into a simulator as interactive training environments improves the performance and the safety of driving policy learned from reinforcement learning. Learning Explicit Credit Assignment for Cooperative Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning via Polarization Policy Gradient

Cooperative multi-agent policy gradient (MAPG) algorithms have recently attracted wide attention and are regarded as a general scheme for the multi-agent system. Credit assignment plays an important role in MAPG and can induce cooperation among multiple agents. However, most MAPG algorithms cannot achieve good credit assignment because of the game-theoretic pathology known as \textit{centralized-decentralized mismatch}. To address this issue, this paper presents a novel method, \textit{\underline{M}ulti-\underline{A}gent \underline{P}olarization \underline{P}olicy \underline{G}radient} (MAPPG). MAPPG takes a simple but efficient polarization function to transform the optimal consistency of joint and individual actions into easily realized constraints, thus enabling efficient credit assignment in MAPG. Theoretically, we prove that individual policies of MAPPG can converge to the global optimum. Empirically, we evaluate MAPPG on the well-known matrix game and differential game, and verify that MAPPG can converge to the global optimum for both discrete and continuous action spaces. We also evaluate MAPPG on a set of StarCraft II micromanagement tasks and demonstrate that MAPPG outperforms the state-of-the-art MAPG algorithms.
