I tried ChatGPT from OpenAI and my mind was blown

#artificialintelligence

I wasn't around when the internet was discovered for the first time but I could only imagine this must be what it's like to do so. Feature Image was a prompt suggested by the AI itself, "A person's mind being stretched and expanded by the limitless possibilities of artificial intelligence". And the tl;dr above is written by it as well. Linh Dao Smooke is the wife of David Smooke, the founder of Hacker Noon. At NeurIPS 2022, generative AI and LLMs are hot topics

#artificialintelligence

Check out the on-demand sessions from the Low-Code/No-Code Summit to learn how to successfully innovate and achieve efficiency by upskilling and scaling citizen developers. Generative AI and LLMs were two of the hottest topics at NeurIPS 2022, which brought the AI and ML community back in-person for the first time since 2019 and has offered "a lot of excitement," said Alice Oh, professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and the conference's lead program chair. Some of that excitement may have been the sound of thousands of keyboards trying out OpenAI's ChatGPT demo, which was released on Wednesday and has been the talk of Twitter, if not NeurIPS, since then. But the Conference and Workshop on Neural Information Processing Systems, a machine learning and computational neuroscience conference held every December, this year in New Orleans, certainly had plenty of its own buzz going on. According to conference leaders, over 10,000 were in attendance in person, with another 3,000 tuning in online.

OpenAI invites everyone to test new AI-powered chatbot--with amusing results

#artificialintelligence

On Wednesday, OpenAI announced ChatGPT, a dialogue-based AI chat interface for its GPT-3 family of large language models. It's currently free to use with an OpenAI account during a testing phase. Unlike the GPT-3 model found in OpenAI's Playground and API, ChatGPT provides a user-friendly conversational interface and is designed to strongly limit potentially harmful output. "The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer followup questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests," writes OpenAI on its announcement blog page. So far, people have been putting ChatGPT through its paces, finding a wide variety of potential uses while also exploring its vulnerabilities.

Programming Is Hard -- Or at Least It Used to Be: Educational Opportunities And Challenges of AI Code Generation

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The introductory programming sequence has been the focus of much research in computing education. The recent advent of several viable and freely-available AI-driven code generation tools present several immediate opportunities and challenges in this domain. In this position paper we argue that the community needs to act quickly in deciding what possible opportunities can and should be leveraged and how, while also working on how to overcome or otherwise mitigate the possible challenges. Assuming that the effectiveness and proliferation of these tools will continue to progress rapidly, without quick, deliberate, and concerted efforts, educators will lose advantage in helping shape what opportunities come to be, and what challenges will endure. With this paper we aim to seed this discussion within the computing education community.

End-to-End Semantic Video Transformer for Zero-Shot Action Recognition

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

While video action recognition has been an active area of research for several years, zero-shot action recognition has only recently started gaining traction. In this work, we propose a novel end-to-end trained transformer model which is capable of capturing long range spatiotemporal dependencies efficiently, contrary to existing approaches which use 3D-CNNs. Moreover, to address a common ambiguity in the existing works about classes that can be considered as previously unseen, we propose a new experimentation setup that satisfies the zero-shot learning premise for action recognition by avoiding overlap between the training and testing classes. The proposed approach significantly outperforms the state of the arts in zero-shot action recognition in terms of the the top-1 accuracy on UCF-101, HMDB-51 and ActivityNet datasets. The code and proposed experimentation setup are available in GitHub: https://github.com/Secure-and-Intelligent-Systems-Lab/SemanticVideoTransformer

DeepMind AI uses deception to beat human players in war game Stratego

New Scientist

An AI can defeat expert human players in the board game Stratego, which has more possible game scenarios than chess, Go or poker. The AI developed by the UK-based company DeepMind became one of the top-ranked online players of the Napoleonic-themed board game Stratego by learning to bluff with weaker pieces and sacrifice important pieces for the sake of victory. "To us the most surprising behaviour was [the AI's] ability to sacrifice valuable pieces to gain information about the opponent's set-up and strategy," says Julien Perolat at DeepMind. The game of Stratego involves two players trying to capture the opponent's flag hidden among an array of 40 game pieces. Most pieces consist of soldiers numbered from one to 10, with the higher-ranked soldiers defeating lower-ranked soldiers during encounters on the board. But players cannot see the identities of opponent game pieces unless two pieces from opposing armies encounter one another โ€“ unlike games such as chess or Go where both players can see everything.

GPT-3 Keeps Evolving even Before GPT-4 is Announced

#artificialintelligence

With the announcement of GPT-4 coming soon and building along with our anticipation really getting up there, what's so incredible about DeepMind or OpenAI is how they keep tweaking and improving their inventions. Not many publications have covered with Davinci-003 is all about so I thought I'd give it a shot. On Monday, OpenAI announced a new model in the GPT-3 family of AI-powered large language models, text-davinci-003, that reportedly improves on its predecessors by handling more complex instructions and producing longer-form content. The Download: Neuralink updates, and GPT-3 fixes

MIT Technology Review

Elon Musk's brain-computer interface company Neuralink is planning to test a brain implant in humans in six months, the company has announced. At a'show and tell' event yesterday, Musk said that the company was in the process of submitting paperwork to the US Food and Drug Administration, which has the power to approve or deny the company's application to start clinical trials in humans. When Musk launched Neuralink in 2017, he outlined plans for "a high-bandwidth, long-lasting, biocompatible, bidirectional" brain implant. This brain modem, he claimed, could somehow allow humans to keep pace with artificial intelligence. Now, after years of delays and experiments on monkeys, he's hoping to prove it can be safely implanted in humans.
