The bot uses data from the internet, books and Wikipedia to produce conversational responses. Our tests found that it sometimes offers responses that potentially include plagiarism, contradict itself, are factually incorrect or have grammatical errors, to name a few -- all of which could be problematic at work.

The most discussed story of the holiday season was not about ransomware or a supply chain attack but about "the smartest chatbot yet" - Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer or ChatGPT. In the past two months, ChatGPT has taken the world by storm, and its feats were reported in The New York Times and other mainstream media. ChatGPT is not just another AI model among the thousands out there. It is touted to challenge human intelligence and take AI closer to humans. It garnered a million users in the first five days since its launch.

On Wednesday, Reuters reported that AI bot ChatGPT reached an estimated 100 million active monthly users last month, a mere two months from launch, making it the "fastest-growing consumer application in history," according to a UBS investment bank research note. In comparison, TikTok took nine months to reach 100 million monthly users, and Instagram about 2.5 years, according to UBS researcher Lloyd Walmsley. "In 20 years following the Internet space, we cannot recall a faster ramp in a consumer internet app," Reuters quotes Walmsley as writing in the UBS note. Reuters says the UBS data comes from analytics firm Similar Web, which states that around 13 million unique visitors used ChatGPT every day in January, doubling the number of users in December. ChatGPT is a conversational large language model (LLM) that can discuss almost any topic at an almost human level.

Have you ever found yourself trawling through endless pages of results on a search engine to find the answer to a complex question? Your research journey might begin by hopping onto Google and typing "is a veg diet good for dogs" into the search box and then having to make sense of the legion of generated links. In the not-so-distant future, finding the answer to a complex question might not be such a tedious, mind-numbing process.

The meteoric rise of ChatGPT has been a watershed moment for artificial intelligence as it enabled millions of users, regular people, to experiment with AI and witness its astonishing capabilities first-hand. While there are still limitations, ChatGPT delivers impressive results, making people aware of how far artificial intelligence has already come. It's no coincidence that both Alphabet and Microsoft named the shift to AI as one of the biggest challenges their facing when they announced their restructuring plans earlier this month. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella even spoke of an upcoming platform shift, likely referring to AI-enabled services as the next big change in tech after the shift to mobile. But what do consumers ultimately expect to change due to the increased use of artificial intelligence and which areas of life will most likely be affected in the next three to five years?

Again, these are broad generalizations and there is a lot of diversity within each generation. It's important to remember that individuals are more than just their generation, and that people of all ages can have a wide range of characteristics and experiences.
