Inside the ChatGPT race in China

MIT Technology Review

Most people who've experienced ChatGPT firsthand in China have accessed it through VPNs or paid workarounds--for example, clever entrepreneurs have essentially rented out OpenAI accounts or asked ChatGPT questions on buyers' behalf, at the price of a few bucks per 20 questions. But even more people are seeing the results through screenshots and short social videos showing ChatGPT's answers, both of which have swept Chinese social media this week. Beyond the allure of the new and hard to access, it's likely been so popular because ChatGPT's ability to answer questions in Chinese has exceeded the expectations of many people (including me!). GPT-3--the previous model of this tech from OpenAI, which was released in 2020 and was also unavailable in China--was not very good at working with Chinese content. And while a few Chinese companies developed localized chatbot alternatives to GPT-3, they have often been derided by users as predictable, repetitive, and frustratingly off base.

ChatGPT will write your Valentine's Day cards, but we are not ready for the AI advancement

#artificialintelligence

Couples for whom the spark may have gone from their relationship will find it a little easier to rekindle the romance this Valentine's Day. Moonpig, the online customised greetings card retailer, is trialling using ChatGPT to generate personalised messages or poems for loved ones. ChatGPT is a generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool, developed by San Francisco company OpenAI, in which Microsoft recently invested billions of dollars. In the few months since a beta version of ChatGPT was released to the world, it has rapidly become an integral part of many people's lives. Estate agents in the United States now say they can't live without the tool's automation to write up property descriptions.

Using ChatGPT to build System Diagrams -- Part I

#artificialintelligence

The popularity of ChatGPT keeps growing and it's now being used in a wide range of applications. As a software architect, I had the opportunity to explore ChatGPT's capabilities for use within the financial domain, specifically for Wealth Management.

ChatGPT for Windows - Desktop Application

#artificialintelligence

Use ChatGPT directly on the Windows desktop instead of in the browser: "ChatGPT Desktop Application" makes it possible. ChatGPT is currently the hottest text AI tool that is usually completely free to use on the web. Instead of using the AI text generator in the browser, the desktop application available here brings ChatGPT directly to the desktop. As a result, you no longer have to keep ChatGPT open in its own tab to interact with the chatbot. Yes, ChatGPT can easily create longer texts.

ChatGPT AI passes test designed to show theory of mind in children

New Scientist

The artificial intelligence model behind the ChatGPT chatbot can solve tasks used to test whether people can understand different perspectives, a key sign of intelligence known as theory of mind. Its ability โ€“ which seems to have spontaneously emerged rather than being something the AI was trained to do โ€“ is comparable to that of a 9-year-old child.

A survey on knowledge-enhanced multimodal learning

AIHub

Multimodal learning is a field of increasing interest in the research community, as it is more closely aligned to the way a human perceives the world: a combination of visual information, language, sounds, and other senses provides complementary insights regarding the world state. Significant advancements in unimodal learning, such as the advent of transformers, boosted the capabilities of multimodal approaches, not only in terms of task-specific performance but also regarding the ability to develop multi-task models. Nevertheless, even such powerful multimodal approaches present shortcomings when it comes to reasoning beyond before-seen knowledge, even if that knowledge refers to simple everyday situations such as "in very cold temperatures the water freezes". This is where external knowledge sources can contribute to enhance model performance by providing such pieces of missing information. The term "knowledge-enhanced" refers to any model utilizing external (or even internal) knowledge sources to extend their predictive capabilities beyond the knowledge that can be extracted from datasets learned during the training phase.

What Is ChatGPT Doing โ€ฆ and Why Does It Work?

#artificialintelligence

By the 10th layer it's harder to interpret what's going on: But in general we might say that the neural net is "picking out certain features" (maybe pointy ears are among them), and using these to determine what the image is of. But are those features ones for which we have names--like "pointy ears"?

Binance about ChatGTP AI model: it helps foster adoption and education about crypto

#artificialintelligence

In a recent blog post, Binance stated its support for the AI model ChatGPT, highlighting its potential to help improve cryptocurrency adoption and education. The chatbot developed by OpenAI went viral in a very short time, quickly becoming one of the fastest growing consumer apps in history. The cryptocurrency exchange platform Binance discussed the immense potential of generative AI, which seems to have taken the tech world by storm. Within the post, the exchange discussed the potential of AI to accelerate mainstream adoption of digital assets. Apparently, ChatGPT has been a consistent headline so far in 2023.

How ChatGPT Can Improve Education, Not Threaten it - Scientific American

#artificialintelligence

To read the news, the sanctity of everything from college application essays to graduate school tests to medical licensing exams is imperiled by easy access to advanced artificial intelligence like ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that can produce remarkably clear, long-form answers to complex questions. Educators in particular worry about students turning to ChatGPT to help them complete assignments. One proposed solution is to roll back the clock to the 20th century, making students write exam essays using pen and paper, without the use of any Internet-connected electronic devices. The University of California, Los Angeles, where I teach, is considering making it an honor code violation to use ChatGPT for taking an exam or writing a paper. This semester, I am telling the students in my class at the UCLA School of Law that they are free to use ChatGPT in their writing assignments.

CBSE officially bans use of ChatGPT during board exams

#artificialintelligence

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially banned the use of ChatGPT, a language processing artificial intelligence (AI) model that has taken the world by storm since its launch in November last year. According to the latest instructions issued by the board ahead of the examinations, "Mobile, ChatGPT and other electronic items will not be allowed in examination hall." "Students are not allowed to carry any electronic devices inside the exam centre. This includes using device to access ChatGPT so that unfair means is not used," a senior board official said. Students at their institutes are banned from using the chatbot for academic assignments such as exams, labs and home works. Launched by Microsoft-back AI research firm, OpenAI in November 2022, ChatGPT is a language processing AI model that is capable of generating human-like text and uses a reinforcement learning method.
