Google is working on AI for ultrasound diagnosis and cancer therapy

Engadget

AI isn't just good for writing term papers or clickbait financial explainers; it could help save lives in the medical field. At Google's annual The Check Up healthcare event, it announced AI-related partnerships for ultrasound readings, medical language models and cancer treatments -- areas where the technology could someday serve as a force for good. Google sees AI as crucial in reading ultrasound devices in regions without enough trained specialists. Although the sensors are more accessible than ever, they require experts to conduct exams and interpret images. The company's AI models could help simplify that process by identifying data like the early detection of breast cancer and gestational age in expectant mothers.

Google announces new generative AI lineup in advance of Microsoft's rumored GPT-4 debut

#artificialintelligence

This morning, Google announced a laundry list of new generative AI capabilities and features for developers, through a PaLM API and in Google Cloud, as well as new integrations for users of Google Workspace, including in Gmail and Google Docs. The announcements come just a month after Google unveiled its search chatbot Bard and less than a week after Bloomberg reported that a new internal Google directive "requires generative AI to be incorporated into all of its biggest products within months." The news also appears in advance of Microsoft's highly-anticipated virtual'Future of Work with AI' event this Thursday. Thanks to comments last week by Microsoft Germany CTO Andreas Braun, that event is rumored to include the release a multimodal GPT-4, as well as a ChatGPT upgrade for Microsoft 365 applications such as Word and Outlook. During a virtual press briefing yesterday, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said that the AI announcements "represent the culmination" of many years of work, including bringing together Transformer technology advances in reinforcement learning and advances in parallelism and orchestrating large training workloads.

Meet the team developing an open source ChatGPT alternative

#artificialintelligence

At the risk of stating the obvious, AI-powered chatbots are hot right now. The tools, which can write essays, emails and more given a few text-based instructions, have captured the attention of tech hobbyists and enterprises alike. OpenAI's ChatGPT, arguably the progenitor, has an estimated more than 100 million users. Via an API, brands including Instacart, Quizlet and Snap have begun building it into their respective platforms, boosting the usage numbers further. But to the chagrin of some within the developer community, the organizations building these chatbots remain part of a well-financed, well-resourced and exclusive club.

Can AI solve IT's eternal data problem?

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence and machine learning already deliver plenty of practical value to enterprises, from fraud detection to chatbots to predictive analytics. But the audacious creative writing skills of ChatGPT have raised expectations for AI/ML to new heights. IT leaders can't help but wonder: Could AI/ML finally be ready to go beyond point solutions and address core enterprise problems? Take the biggest, oldest, most confounding IT problem of all: Managing and integrating data across the enterprise. Today, that endeavor cries out for help from AI/ML technologies, as the volume, variety, variability, and distribution of data across on-prem and cloud platforms climb an endless exponential curve.

Medical science students were told to use ChatGPT. This is what it wrote

#artificialintelligence

The assignment due last Sunday night calls on 180 students to compose a question about contemporary medical challenges and ask ChatGPT to write an essay on it. Students must read what the robot produces, edit its response, track their changes and submit a final draft for marking. Brown said the assignment was testing students' ability to exercise judgment and be creative because those were skills that would be required in their professional lives, rather than simply collating information. "There are different types of knowing โ€“ one of the basic types is memorising and reproducing information or collating information โ€“ that is a stock-in-trade for universities but ChatGPT does that," Brown said. Successfully manipulating a question for ChatGPT to produce an optimal essay was one of the main criteria for success while the marker would also judge how they had edited the essay to an acceptable standard.

ChatGPT and Cybersecurity: What AI means for digital security - AfricaBusiness.com

#artificialintelligence

As AI technology like ChatGPT evolves, so do the strategies and tactics used by cybercriminals. Steve Flynn, Sales and Marketing Director at ESET Southern Africa, says ongoing awareness is crucial in understanding how to manage potential cybersecurity challenges posed by these developing tools. As artificial intelligence (AI) technology becomes a new reality for individuals and businesses, its potential impact on cybersecurity cannot be ignored. OpenAI and its language model, ChatGPT, are no exception and while these tools offer significant benefits to almost every industry, they also present new challenges for digital security. ChatGPT raises concerns due to its natural language processing capabilities, which could be used to create highly personalised and sophisticated cyberattacks.

Exploring the Intersection of AI and Physics: The Role of ChatGPT in Code Generation

#artificialintelligence

Imagine a world where machines can generate code to solve complex problems in the physical world around us. ChatGPT, a type of Natural Language Processor (NLP) which writes human-like responses from user input prompts can do just that. In this article, I am going to show you how. Right now, anyone can use the research release of ChatGPT -- you just need to head over to OpenAIs website and sign up for an account to try it. A lot is going on under the hood of ChatGPT and I am not going to attempt to explain it here (OpenAI gives a detailed overview of how the technology works on its website).
