Generate, Transform, Answer: Question Specific Tool Synthesis for Tabular Data

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Tabular question answering (TQA) presents a challenging setting for neural systems by requiring joint reasoning of natural language with large amounts of semi-structured data. Unlike humans who use programmatic tools like filters to transform data before processing, language models in TQA process tables directly, resulting in information loss as table size increases. In this paper we propose ToolWriter to generate query specific programs and detect when to apply them to transform tables and align them with the TQA model's capabilities. Focusing ToolWriter to generate row-filtering tools improves the state-of-the-art for WikiTableQuestions and WikiSQL with the most performance gained on long tables. By investigating headroom, our work highlights the broader potential for programmatic tools combined with neural components to manipulate large amounts of structured data.

Microsoft and Google are bringing AI to Word, PowerPoint, Google Docs, and other apps - Vox

#artificialintelligence

Microsoft is adding new AI features to its popular apps like Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. The new set of tools, called Microsoft 365 Copilot, will let people do things like create PowerPoint decks with a short prompt or summarize meeting recordings. Copilot runs on the same underlying AI technology that powers the buzzy viral chatbot ChatGPT, and is being tested now with a few business partners ahead of a wider release to all users in the "coming months," according to the company. "Today we are at the start of a new era of computing," said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in a livestreamed announcement on Thursday. Nadella said Microsoft's new AI products will "remove the drudgery of our daily tasks and jobs, freeing us to rediscover the joy of creation."

The ChatGPT Phenomenon: OpenAI's Language Model eBook : Reynolds, Jake : Amazon.in: Kindle Store

#artificialintelligence

"The ChatGPT Phenomenon" is a book that explores the inner workings of OpenAI's language model, ChatGPT. Written by computer science expert, Jake Reynolds, the book delves into the technical details of how ChatGPT works, and how it has revolutionized the field of natural language processing. The book starts by introducing the reader to the basics of language models and the history of artificial intelligence, setting the stage for the emergence of ChatGPT. The author then goes on to explain the architecture of ChatGPT and how it differs from other language models, highlighting its unique strengths and capabilities. As the book progresses, the author provides practical examples and case studies of how ChatGPT is being used in various industries, such as chatbots, content creation, and language translation.

5 Ways To Teach With ChatGPT

#artificialintelligence

Learning to teach with ChatGPT is a new and somewhat controversial practice. Much of the conversation in education since the advanced AI chatbot debuted in late 2022 has focused on how to prevent ChatGPT cheating (opens in new tab). However, many educators now teach with ChatGPT and find it a helpful and versatile tool. Just remember ChatGPT is designed for use by adults 18 and up, and is still new technology with potential uses and misuses that are not yet fully understood. For example, technology related to ChatGPT that has been integrated with the Bing search engine for select users recently made headlines for saying disturbing things (opens in new tab) to a New York Times reporter.

Chinese tech giant Baidu releases its answer to ChatGPT

MIT Technology Review

As expected, Ernie Bot (the name stands for "Enhanced Representation from kNowledge IntEgration;" its Chinese name is 文心一言, or Wenxin Yiyan) performs particularly well on tasks specific to Chinese culture, like explaining a historical fact or writing a traditional poem. But the highlight of the product release was Ernie Bot's multimodal output feature, which ChatGPT and GPT-4 do not offer (OpenAI has bragged about GPT-4's ability to analyze a photo of the contents of a refrigerator and come up with recipe suggestions, but the model generates only text). Li showed a recorded interaction with the bot where it generated an illustration of a futuristic city transportation system, used Chinese dialect to read out a text answer, and edited and subtitled a video based on the same text. However, in later testing after the launch, a Chinese publication failed to reproduce the video generation. The Chinese public has been hungry for a ChatGPT alternative; both OpenAI and the Chinese government have barred individuals in China from using the American chatbot. But so far, Ernie Bot has been made available only to an extremely select pool of Chinese creators.

The Unpredictable Abilities Emerging From Large AI Models

What movie do these emojis describe? That prompt was one of 204 tasks chosen last year to test the ability of various large language models (LLMs) -- the computational engines behind AI chatbots such as ChatGPT. The simplest LLMs produced surreal responses. "The movie is a movie about a man who is a man who is a man," one began. Medium-complexity models came closer, guessing The Emoji Movie.

Debunking Misconceptions: How Chat GPT4 Can Help Universities Eliminate Cheating on Assessments

#artificialintelligence

Cheating in student assessments and exams has long been challenging for universities worldwide. Students are under increasing pressure to perform well, and some cheat to achieve good grades. This has led to universities implementing strict measures to prevent cheating, but new approaches are required with the advent of new technologies. One such technology that has the potential to help universities eliminate cheating is Chat GPT4. As universities worldwide continue to grapple with the challenge of eliminating cheating on student assessments and exams, the potential of new technologies like Chat GPT4 to help solve the problem is undeniable. However, some argue that such technologies may contribute to the problem by making cheating easier for students.

Open AI Releases New AI GPT-4 - GoSpeed Hub

#artificialintelligence

After the release of the powerful AI bot ChatGPT, its creators, Open AI, have released their latest AI model, which will be called GPT-4. The new model is only available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers for $20 monthly. The company has announced that the new addition to the AI family exhibits human-like performance on professional and economic tasks. It took the bar exams written by law school students before they could become professionals, and after the exams, GPT-4 was among the top 10% of test takers. GPT-4 has a lot of flexible capabilities, the biggest being that it is multimodal.

What Have Humans Just Unleashed?

The Atlantic - Technology

GPT-4 is here, and you've probably heard a good bit about it already. It can turn a hand-sketched design into a functional website and help with your taxes. It got a 5 on the AP Art History test. There were already fears about AI coming for white-collar work, disrupting education, and so much else, and there was some healthy skepticism about those fears. So where does a more powerful AI leave us?

China's ChatGPT rival Baidu Ernie is off to a rough start

#artificialintelligence

Following on the heels of GPT-4's buzzy debut and the announcement of Microsoft 365's AI makeover, Baidu, China's search engine giant, introduced its Ernie Bot. Since ChatGPT blew the world away, Baidu has been widely considered the closest Chinee candidate to build an equivalent to the OpenAI chatbot. Naturally, Ernie's launch was much anticipated. On Thursday, Baidu CEO Robin Li gave a one-hour presentation on Ernie that only offered a small glimpse into the chatbot. The jury is still out on what Ernie can do and how it actually works.
