OpenAI debuts GPT-5, paving the way for an even smarter ChatGPT
OpenAI on Thursday announced GPT-5, the foundational model for the next generation of ChatGPT and a "significant leap in intelligence," according to the company. GPT-5 will be released in two versions, a "pro" model which will only be accessible to paid subscribers, and the basic GPT-5, which will actually be available to everyone, even those on ChatGPT's free plan. Plus subscribers will get more usage, OpenAI said. Interestingly, OpenAI won't explicitly make which model ChatGPT is using available to ChatGPT users. An interesting feature of the new GPT-5 is a "real-time router" which will assign a model based on the query the user asks.

OpenAI has highlighted GPT-5's ability to create software in its entirety and demonstrate better reasoning capabilities - with answers that show workings, logic and inference. The company claims it has been trained to be more honest, provide users with more accurate responses and says that, overall, it feels more human. According to Altman, the model is "significantly better" than its predecessors. "GPT-3 sort of felt to me like talking to a high school student... 4 felt like you're kind of talking to a college student," he said in a briefing ahead of Thursday's launch. "GPT-5 is the first time that it really feels like talking to an expert in any topic, like a PhD-level expert."

Whereas o1 was a major technological advancement, GPT-5 is, above all else, a refined product. During a press briefing, Sam Altman compared GPT-5 to Apple's Retina displays, and it's an apt analogy, though perhaps not in the way that he intended. Much like an unprecedentedly crisp screen, GPT-5 will furnish a more pleasant and seamless user experience. That's not nothing, but it falls far short of the transformative AI future that Altman has spent much of the past year hyping. In the briefing, Altman called GPT-5 "a significant step along the path to AGI," or artificial general intelligence, and maybe he's right--but if so, it's a very small step.

A team of security researchers at Tel Aviv University managed to get Google's Gemini AI system to remotely operate appliances in a smart home, using a "poisoned" Google Calendar invite that hid prompt injection attacks. At the Black Hat security conference, they demonstrated that this method could be used to turn the apartment's lights on and off, operate the smart window shutters, and even turn on the boiler, all completely beyond the control of the residents.

Tokyo Electron fires worker suspected of stealing TSMC tech
Tokyo Electron said Thursday it's fired an employee at its Taipei unit, making its first public statement since the island's government arrested six people suspected of stealing trade secrets from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. The Japanese chip gear maker said in a statement it's cooperating with the ongoing investigation, though it remains unclear if any data had been shared with third parties. Taiwan prosecutors arrested the six suspected of intellectual property theft at TSMC this week, including an individual that local media identified as a former Tokyo Electron staffer. The Japanese company is one of the largest suppliers of semiconductor-fabrication tools and gear to TSMC, which in turn uses the equipment to make Nvidia AI accelerators and Apple iPhone processors. Investigators haven't disclosed many more details of the case, which coincides with a quickening race by the likes of Meta and DeepSeek to develop artificial intelligence in the post-ChatGPT era.
