ECQED: Emotion-Cause Quadruple Extraction in Dialogs

The existing emotion-cause pair extraction (ECPE) task, unfortunately, ignores extracting the emotion type and cause type, while these fine-grained meta-information can be practically useful in real-world applications, i.e., chat robots and empathic dialog generation. Also the current ECPE is limited to the scenario of single text piece, while neglecting the studies at dialog level that should have more realistic values. In this paper, we extend the ECPE task with a broader definition and scenario, presenting a new task, Emotion-Cause Quadruple Extraction in Dialogs (ECQED), which requires detecting emotion-cause utterance pairs and emotion and cause types. We present an ECQED model based on a structural and semantic heterogeneous graph as well as a parallel grid tagging scheme, which advances in effectively incorporating the dialog context structure, meanwhile solving the challenging overlapped quadruple issue. Via experiments we show that introducing the fine-grained emotion and cause features evidently helps better dialog generation. Also our proposed ECQED system shows exceptional superiority over baselines on both the emotion-cause quadruple or pair extraction tasks, meanwhile being highly efficient.


Towards Arabic Multimodal Dataset for Sentiment Analysis

Multimodal Sentiment Analysis (MSA) has recently become a centric research direction for many real-world applications. This proliferation is due to the fact that opinions are central to almost all human activities and are key influencers of our behaviors. In addition, the recent deployment of Deep Learning-based (DL) models has proven their high efficiency for a wide range of Western languages. In contrast, Arabic DL-based multimodal sentiment analysis (MSA) is still in its infantile stage due, mainly, to the lack of standard datasets. In this paper, our investigation is twofold. First, we design a pipeline that helps building our Arabic Multimodal dataset leveraging both state-of-the-art transformers and feature extraction tools within word alignment techniques. Thereafter, we validate our dataset using state-of-the-art transformer-based model dealing with multimodality. Despite the small size of the outcome dataset, experiments show that Arabic multimodality is very promising


SentiGOLD: A Large Bangla Gold Standard Multi-Domain Sentiment Analysis Dataset and its Evaluation

This study introduces SentiGOLD, a Bangla multi-domain sentiment analysis dataset. Comprising 70,000 samples, it was created from diverse sources and annotated by a gender-balanced team of linguists. SentiGOLD adheres to established linguistic conventions agreed upon by the Government of Bangladesh and a Bangla linguistics committee. Unlike English and other languages, Bangla lacks standard sentiment analysis datasets due to the absence of a national linguistics framework. The dataset incorporates data from online video comments, social media posts, blogs, news, and other sources while maintaining domain and class distribution rigorously. It spans 30 domains (e.g., politics, entertainment, sports) and includes 5 sentiment classes (strongly negative, weakly negative, neutral, and strongly positive). The annotation scheme, approved by the national linguistics committee, ensures a robust Inter Annotator Agreement (IAA) with a Fleiss' kappa score of 0.88. Intra- and cross-dataset evaluation protocols are applied to establish a standard classification system. Cross-dataset evaluation on the noisy SentNoB dataset presents a challenging test scenario. Additionally, zero-shot experiments demonstrate the generalizability of SentiGOLD. The top model achieves a macro f1 score of 0.62 (intra-dataset) across 5 classes, setting a benchmark, and 0.61 (cross-dataset from SentNoB) across 3 classes, comparable to the state-of-the-art. Causality between Sentiment and Cryptocurrency Prices

This study investigates the relationship between narratives conveyed through microblogging platforms, namely Twitter, and the value of crypto assets. Our study provides a unique technique to build narratives about cryptocurrency by combining topic modelling of short texts with sentiment analysis. First, we used an unsupervised machine learning algorithm to discover the latent topics within the massive and noisy textual data from Twitter, and then we revealed 4-5 cryptocurrency-related narratives, including financial investment, technological advancement related to crypto, financial and political regulations, crypto assets, and media coverage. In a number of situations, we noticed a strong link between our narratives and crypto prices. Our work connects the most recent innovation in economics, Narrative Economics, to a new area of study that combines topic modelling and sentiment analysis to relate consumer behaviour to narratives.


Bias Against 93 Stigmatized Groups in Masked Language Models and Downstream Sentiment Classification Tasks

The rapid deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) models demands a thorough investigation of biases and risks inherent in these models to understand their impact on individuals and society. This study extends the focus of bias evaluation in extant work by examining bias against social stigmas on a large scale. It focuses on 93 stigmatized groups in the United States, including a wide range of conditions related to disease, disability, drug use, mental illness, religion, sexuality, socioeconomic status, and other relevant factors. We investigate bias against these groups in English pre-trained Masked Language Models (MLMs) and their downstream sentiment classification tasks. To evaluate the presence of bias against 93 stigmatized conditions, we identify 29 non-stigmatized conditions to conduct a comparative analysis. Building upon a psychology scale of social rejection, the Social Distance Scale, we prompt six MLMs: RoBERTa-base, RoBERTa-large, XLNet-large, BERTweet-base, BERTweet-large, and DistilBERT. We use human annotations to analyze the predicted words from these models, with which we measure the extent of bias against stigmatized groups. When prompts include stigmatized conditions, the probability of MLMs predicting negative words is approximately 20 percent higher than when prompts have non-stigmatized conditions. In the sentiment classification tasks, when sentences include stigmatized conditions related to diseases, disability, education, and mental illness, they are more likely to be classified as negative. We also observe a strong correlation between bias in MLMs and their downstream sentiment classifiers (r =0.79). The evidence indicates that MLMs and their downstream sentiment classification tasks exhibit biases against socially stigmatized groups.


Reasoning Implicit Sentiment with Chain-of-Thought Prompting

While sentiment analysis systems try to determine the sentiment polarities of given targets based on the key opinion expressions in input texts, in implicit sentiment analysis (ISA) the opinion cues come in an implicit and obscure manner. Thus detecting implicit sentiment requires the common-sense and multi-hop reasoning ability to infer the latent intent of opinion. Inspired by the recent chain-of-thought (CoT) idea, in this work we introduce a Three-hop Reasoning (THOR) CoT framework to mimic the human-like reasoning process for ISA. We design a three-step prompting principle for THOR to step-by-step induce the implicit aspect, opinion, and finally the sentiment polarity. Our THOR+Flan-T5 (11B) pushes the state-of-the-art (SoTA) by over 6% F1 on supervised setup. More strikingly, THOR+GPT3 (175B) boosts the SoTA by over 50% F1 on zero-shot setting. BanglaBook: A Large-scale Bangla Dataset for Sentiment Analysis from Book Reviews

The analysis of consumer sentiment, as expressed through reviews, can provide a wealth of insight regarding the quality of a product. While the study of sentiment analysis has been widely explored in many popular languages, relatively less attention has been given to the Bangla language, mostly due to a lack of relevant data and cross-domain adaptability. To address this limitation, we present BanglaBook, a large-scale dataset of Bangla book reviews consisting of 158,065 samples classified into three broad categories: positive, negative, and neutral. We provide a detailed statistical analysis of the dataset and employ a range of machine learning models to establish baselines including SVM, LSTM, and Bangla-BERT. Our findings demonstrate a substantial performance advantage of pre-trained models over models that rely on manually crafted features, emphasizing the necessity for additional training resources in this domain. Additionally, we conduct an in-depth error analysis by examining sentiment unigrams, which may provide insight into common classification errors in under-resourced languages like Bangla. Communist party accessed TikTok data of Hong Kong protesters, former executive alleges

A former executive at TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, has alleged that the Chinese Communist party accessed user data from the social video app belonging to Hong Kong protesters and civil rights activists. Yintao Yu, a former head of engineering at ByteDance's US operation, claimed in a legal filing that a committee of Communist party members accessed TikTok data that included the users' network information, Sim card identifications and IP addresses in a bid to identify the individuals and their locations. The claims, in a wrongful dismissal lawsuit brought by Yu in a California court and reported by the Wall Street Journal, also allege the party accessed TikTok users' communications, monitored Hong Kong users who uploaded protest-related content and that Beijing-based ByteDance maintained a "backdoor channel" for the party to access US user data. Yu alleges in the filing that members of a Communist party committee inside ByteDance had access to a "superuser" credential which was also called a "God credential" and allowed them to view all data collected by ByteDance. The filing adds that when Yu was at ByteDance, between August 2017 and November 2018, TikTok stored all users' direct messages, search histories and content viewed by users.


Co-evolving Graph Reasoning Network for Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction

Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction (ECPE) aims to extract all emotion clauses and their corresponding cause clauses from a document. Existing approaches tackle this task through multi-task learning (MTL) framework in which the two subtasks provide indicative clues for ECPE. However, the previous MTL framework considers only one round of multi-task reasoning and ignores the reverse feedbacks from ECPE to the subtasks. Besides, its multi-task reasoning only relies on semantics-level interactions, which cannot capture the explicit dependencies, and both the encoder sharing and multi-task hidden states concatenations can hardly capture the causalities. To solve these issues, we first put forward a new MTL framework based on Co-evolving Reasoning. It (1) models the bidirectional feedbacks between ECPE and its subtasks; (2) allows the three tasks to evolve together and prompt each other recurrently; (3) integrates prediction-level interactions to capture explicit dependencies. Then we propose a novel multi-task relational graph (MRG) to sufficiently exploit the causal relations. Finally, we propose a Co-evolving Graph Reasoning Network (CGR-Net) that implements our MTL framework and conducts Co-evolving Reasoning on MRG. Experimental results show that our model achieves new state-of-the-art performance, and further analysis confirms the advantages of our method.


A Unified One-Step Solution for Aspect Sentiment Quad Prediction

Aspect sentiment quad prediction (ASQP) is a challenging yet significant subtask in aspect-based sentiment analysis as it provides a complete aspect-level sentiment structure. However, existing ASQP datasets are usually small and low-density, hindering technical advancement. To expand the capacity, in this paper, we release two new datasets for ASQP, which contain the following characteristics: larger size, more words per sample, and higher density. With such datasets, we unveil the shortcomings of existing strong ASQP baselines and therefore propose a unified one-step solution for ASQP, namely One-ASQP, to detect the aspect categories and to identify the aspect-opinion-sentiment (AOS) triplets simultaneously. Our One-ASQP holds several unique advantages: (1) by separating ASQP into two subtasks and solving them independently and simultaneously, we can avoid error propagation in pipeline-based methods and overcome slow training and inference in generation-based methods; (2) by introducing sentiment-specific horns tagging schema in a token-pair-based two-dimensional matrix, we can exploit deeper interactions between sentiment elements and efficiently decode the AOS triplets; (3) we design ``[NULL]'' token can help us effectively identify the implicit aspects or opinions. Experiments on two benchmark datasets and our released two datasets demonstrate the advantages of our One-ASQP.
