Knowledge-Enhanced Multi-Label Few-Shot Product Attribute-Value Extraction

Existing attribute-value extraction (AVE) models require large quantities of labeled data for training. However, new products with new attribute-value pairs enter the market every day in real-world e-Commerce. Thus, we formulate AVE in multi-label few-shot learning (FSL), aiming to extract unseen attribute value pairs based on a small number of training examples. We propose a Knowledge-Enhanced Attentive Framework (KEAF) based on prototypical networks, leveraging the generated label description and category information to learn more discriminative prototypes. Besides, KEAF integrates with hybrid attention to reduce noise and capture more informative semantics for each class by calculating the label-relevant and query-related weights. To achieve multi-label inference, KEAF further learns a dynamic threshold by integrating the semantic information from both the support set and the query set. Extensive experiments with ablation studies conducted on two datasets demonstrate that KEAF outperforms other SOTA models for information extraction in FSL. Syntax-Guided Domain Adaptation for Aspect-based Sentiment Analysis

Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) aims at extracting opinionated aspect terms in review texts and determining their sentiment polarities, which is widely studied in both academia and industry. As a fine-grained classification task, the annotation cost is extremely high. Domain adaptation is a popular solution to alleviate the data deficiency issue in new domains by transferring common knowledge across domains. Most cross-domain ABSA studies are based on structure correspondence learning (SCL), and use pivot features to construct auxiliary tasks for narrowing down the gap between domains. However, their pivot-based auxiliary tasks can only transfer knowledge of aspect terms but not sentiment, limiting the performance of existing models. In this work, we propose a novel Syntax-guided Domain Adaptation Model, named SDAM, for more effective cross-domain ABSA. SDAM exploits syntactic structure similarities for building pseudo training instances, during which aspect terms of target domain are explicitly related to sentiment polarities. Besides, we propose a syntax-based BERT mask language model for further capturing domain-invariant features. Finally, to alleviate the sentiment inconsistency issue in multi-gram aspect terms, we introduce a span-based joint aspect term and sentiment analysis module into the cross-domain End2End ABSA. Experiments on five benchmark datasets show that our model consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines with respect to Micro-F1 metric for the cross-domain End2End ABSA task.


A Bi-directional Multi-hop Inference Model for Joint Dialog Sentiment Classification and Act Recognition

The joint task of Dialog Sentiment Classification (DSC) and Act Recognition (DAR) aims to predict the sentiment label and act label for each utterance in a dialog simultaneously. However, current methods encode the dialog context in only one direction, which limits their ability to thoroughly comprehend the context. Moreover, these methods overlook the explicit correlations between sentiment and act labels, which leads to an insufficient ability to capture rich sentiment and act clues and hinders effective and accurate reasoning. To address these issues, we propose a Bi-directional Multi-hop Inference Model (BMIM) that leverages a feature selection network and a bi-directional multi-hop inference network to iteratively extract and integrate rich sentiment and act clues in a bi-directional manner. We also employ contrastive learning and dual learning to explicitly model the correlations of sentiment and act labels. Our experiments on two widely-used datasets show that BMIM outperforms state-of-the-art baselines by at least 2.6% on F1 score in DAR and 1.4% on F1 score in DSC. Additionally, Our proposed model not only improves the performance but also enhances the interpretability of the joint sentiment and act prediction task.


Tweet Sentiment Extraction using Viterbi Algorithm with Transfer Learning

Determining the sentiment of a tweet can be a laborious task for NLP specialists, as they need to identify the specific segment of the sentence that accurately reflects the sentiment and its boundaries. It can be challenging to accomplish this task when the sentences are lengthy and the intended emotion is conveyed using multiple words or placed at the start or end. Information extraction and sentiment analysis are indispensable for processing news feeds and posts from public profiles of celebrities and ordinary persons to determine the sentiment of a tweet. When automated, these activities allow the categorization of tweets into several predefined classes and perhaps avoid the diffusion of fake news or toxic posts. Emotional writing can engage users and encourage them to spend more time browsing a website or getting more information about a product. However, it can also negatively impact the reader's mood, especially when they come across a toxic text with a high frequency of negative emotions, such as insulting comments or discriminatory remarks from followers on social media. Detecting such infractions early can increase the audience number on a web page and avoid unsubscribing clicks. When it comes to opinion mining, analyzing public opinion can be highly beneficial in assessing satisfaction and agreement with political decisions and programs. This type of analysis can offer valuable insights into a candidate's popularity and even aid in predicting their likelihood of winning an election compared to their competitors.


Using Twitter Data to Determine Hurricane Category: An Experiment

Social media posts contain an abundant amount of information about public opinion on major events, especially natural disasters such as hurricanes. Posts related to an event, are usually published by the users who live near the place of the event at the time of the event. Special correlation between the social media data and the events can be obtained using data mining approaches. This paper presents research work to find the mappings between social media data and the severity level of a disaster. Specifically, we have investigated the Twitter data posted during hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and attempted to find the correlation between the Twitter data of a specific area and the hurricane level in that area. Our experimental results indicate a positive correlation between them. We also present a method to predict the hurricane category for a specific area using relevant Twitter data.


RadGraph2: Modeling Disease Progression in Radiology Reports via Hierarchical Information Extraction

We present RadGraph2, a novel dataset for extracting information from radiology reports that focuses on capturing changes in disease state and device placement over time. We introduce a hierarchical schema that organizes entities based on their relationships and show that using this hierarchy during training improves the performance of an information extraction model. Specifically, we propose a modification to the DyGIE++ framework, resulting in our model HGIE, which outperforms previous models in entity and relation extraction tasks. We demonstrate that RadGraph2 enables models to capture a wider variety of findings and perform better at relation extraction compared to those trained on the original RadGraph dataset. Our work provides the foundation for developing automated systems that can track disease progression over time and develop information extraction models that leverage the natural hierarchy of labels in the medical domain.


Social Media, Topic Modeling and Sentiment Analysis in Municipal Decision Support

Many cities around the world are aspiring to become. However, smart initiatives often give little weight to the opinions of average citizens. Social media are one of the most important sources of citizen opinions. This paper presents a prototype of a framework for processing social media posts with municipal decision-making in mind. The framework consists of a sequence of three steps: (1) determining the sentiment polarity of each social media post (2) identifying prevalent topics and mapping these topics to individual posts, and (3) aggregating these two pieces of information into a fuzzy number representing the overall sentiment expressed towards each topic. Optionally, the fuzzy number can be reduced into a tuple of two real numbers indicating the "amount" of positive and negative opinion expressed towards each topic. The framework is demonstrated on tweets published from Ostrava, Czechia over a period of about two months. This application illustrates how fuzzy numbers represent sentiment in a richer way and capture the diversity of opinions expressed on social media.


General Debiasing for Multimodal Sentiment Analysis

Existing work on Multimodal Sentiment Analysis (MSA) utilizes multimodal information for prediction yet unavoidably suffers from fitting the spurious correlations between multimodal features and sentiment labels. For example, if most videos with a blue background have positive labels in a dataset, the model will rely on such correlations for prediction, while "blue background" is not a sentiment-related feature. To address this problem, we define a general debiasing MSA task, which aims to enhance the Out-Of-Distribution (OOD) generalization ability of MSA models by reducing their reliance on spurious correlations. To this end, we propose a general debiasing framework based on Inverse Probability Weighting (IPW), which adaptively assigns small weights to the samples with larger bias (i.e., the severer spurious correlations). The key to this debiasing framework is to estimate the bias of each sample, which is achieved by two steps: 1) disentangling the robust features and biased features in each modality, and 2) utilizing the biased features to estimate the bias. Finally, we employ IPW to reduce the effects of large-biased samples, facilitating robust feature learning for sentiment prediction. To examine the model's generalization ability, we keep the original testing sets on two benchmarks and additionally construct multiple unimodal and multimodal OOD testing sets. Analysis of the Evolution of Advanced Transformer-Based Language Models: Experiments on Opinion Mining

Opinion mining, also known as sentiment analysis, is a subfield of natural language processing (NLP) that focuses on identifying and extracting subjective information in textual material. This can include determining the overall sentiment of a piece of text (e.g., positive or negative), as well as identifying specific emotions or opinions expressed in the text, that involves the use of advanced machine and deep learning techniques. Recently, transformer-based language models make this task of human emotion analysis intuitive, thanks to the attention mechanism and parallel computation. These advantages make such models very powerful on linguistic tasks, unlike recurrent neural networks that spend a lot of time on sequential processing, making them prone to fail when it comes to processing long text. The scope of our paper aims to study the behaviour of the cutting-edge Transformer-based language models on opinion mining and provide a high-level comparison between them to highlight their key particularities. Additionally, our comparative study shows leads and paves the way for production engineers regarding the approach to focus on and is useful for researchers as it provides guidelines for future research subjects.


Tweet Insights: A Visualization Platform to Extract Temporal Insights from Twitter

This paper introduces a large collection of time series data derived from Twitter, postprocessed using word embedding techniques, as well as specialized fine-tuned language models. This data comprises the past five years and captures changes in n-gram frequency, similarity, sentiment and topic distribution. The interface built on top of this data enables temporal analysis for detecting and characterizing shifts in meaning, including complementary information to trending metrics, such as sentiment and topic association over time. We release an online demo for easy experimentation, and we share code and the underlying aggregated data for future work. In this paper, we also discuss three case studies unlocked thanks to our platform, showcasing its potential for temporal linguistic analysis.
