Google's new AI weather model uses live satellite data for higher-resolution forecasts

Engadget

Google DeepMind has released the WeatherNext 3, an updated version of its last AI-powered weather model that it claims offers even more detailed forecasts across key variables like temperature, moisture and wind speed. DeepMind notes the new model should be particularly useful to companies working in renewable energy production, because of its ability to forecast "100-meter wind speeds (roughly at turbine-height) for precise wind-energy output, alongside high-resolution cloud cover and sun radiation levels to help solar farms." WeatherNext 3's ability to offer hourly and higher-resolution forecasts (in a 5-kilometer square grid rather than the 25-kilometer square grid of WeatherNext 2) is all due to the new data it's trained on, DeepMind says. Rather than primarily relying on data from numerical weather prediction models, which include a six-hour lag, WeatherNext 3 incorporates live satellite data, which gives the model "a rich, continuously updating view of the atmosphere." The model's ingestion of sparse weather station data means it can also offer more detailed forecasts of variables like humidity, which can usually change dramatically from one kilometer to the next.

On Thursday, Nvidia, the tech giant that develops chips that power AI tools like ChatGPT, announced its acquisition of Hugging Face for nearly $13 billion amid an arms race to dominate every level of the industry. Well, specifically, the cost was $12,930,300,000, with 129,303 apparently being the character encoding for the emoji, which the startup Nvidia acquired is named after . Hugging Face is the venture that broke into AI safety discussions when OpenAI's advanced system breached its platform while undergoing a test .

OpenAI hails'new era of artificial general intelligence' with Astra model release Astra's arrival comes days after Sam Altman, OpenAI's chief executive, described AGI as an'irrelevant marketing term' The president of OpenAI, Greg Brockman, has claimed the world has entered a new era of artificial general intelligence after the release of his company's latest model, Astra, which it described as the "world's most intelligent and aligned model". Brockman made the claim on Thursday as the San Francisco company released the model only weeks after a serious AI safety incident involving other models under its development caused international concern and a pause in Astra's training. Artificial general intelligence - or AGI - is a fuzzy threshold that has long been talked about as a target for the AI industry.

GPT-6 Astra Is Here--and OpenAI Thinks It May Kick Off the AGI Era

OpenAI leaders think the company's next generation model, which excels at computer use and coding, may mark a major milestone in AI development. OpenAI announced Thursday the launch of its next generation AI model, GPT-6 Astra, which the company claims is state of the art at navigating computers and web browsers, writing software, and solving difficult math problems. It plans to make GPT-6 Astra available to paid customers in the coming days, starting with enterprise clients in its Daybreak early access program, followed by ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business plan subscribers. OpenAI did not say whether GPT-6 Astra will be available to free users of ChatGPT. In a press briefing with reporters, OpenAI executives made it clear that they feel very confident about the company's latest AI model.

OpenAI Cut Off a Billion-Dollar Customer to Avoid Elon Musk

WIRED

OpenAI recently estimated its Cursor partnership would make more than $1 billion in revenue a year, WIRED has learned. It still walked away after Elon Musk's SpaceX acquired the AI coding startup. In a late-night blog post last Friday, OpenAI said it would wind down its partnership with Cursor, the startup behind one of the most popular AI coding tools on the market. The reason OpenAI gave for the decision is effectively that it can't trust Elon Musk, whose company SpaceX recently acquired Cursor in a $60 billion deal. In doing so, OpenAI walked away from one of its most important customers. Cursor has long paid OpenAI fees to offer the ChatGPT-maker's models to developers using its AI coding editor.

Nvidia's Hugging Face Acquisition Is a 12.9 Billion Bet on Open-Source AI

WIRED

Nvidia's Hugging Face Acquisition Is a $12.9 Billion Bet on Open-Source AI The long-rumored deal will give the chip giant access to--and help it promote--a huge repository of open-source AI models and data sets. Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, which makes online developer tools and maintains a massive library of open-source data sets, for nearly $13 billion. While the deal had been rumored for weeks, the companies made it official Thursday morning. The deal signals Nvidia's seriousness about being steeped in the software side of generative AI development as well as in infrastructure. Nvidia already offers customers a suite of free, customizable open-weights AI models, known as Nemotron.

PSA: Don't rely on AI to plan anything that could put your life at risk... like a mountain climb

Engadget

A group of climbers set out to climb Mount Shasta in Siskiyou County, California thinking it would only take them eight hours, because that's what Google's Gemini chatbot told them. Gemini ended up being very, very wrong. Specifically, they relied on the chatbot for route research and asked it for recommendations on how much food and water to take with them. Gemini reportedly told them to prepare for an eight-hour trek and pack food with simple carbohydrates instead of fats, because fats "take too long to digest." As a result, they carried daypacks with just enough food and water for a short climb, with no plans for shelter and no warm clothing.
