NSF Awards $2M For Research on Quantum Machine Learning With Photonics

Full-scale quantum computers that would rely on conventional gate-based quantum computer architectures require quantum error correction--a goal outside the reach of existing technology. In this project, the researchers will focus on architectures inspired by machine learning and deep learning to implement quantum protocols that are naturally efficient and robust against noise. The project will leverage quantum photonics, based on manipulation of quantum states of light, to develop these quantum machine learning architectures.

This power was highlighted vividly by a study published at the end of August by researchers from University College London and Duke University, who managed to use artificial intelligence to create separate representations of two images that had been painted on both sides of a single panel. More specifically, they used X-ray imaging techniques to produce a combined representation of the outer panels of the famous 15th Century Ghent Altarpiece painting. Because the resulting image was a combination of two images superimposed on each other, it was previously hard to analyze.

It is now table stakes for artificial intelligence algorithms to "learn" about the world around them. The next level: For AI bots to learn how to talk to each other -- and develop their own shared language. New research released last week by OpenAI, the artificial intelligence nonprofit lab founded by Elon Musk and Y Combinator president Sam Altman, details how they're training AI bots to create their own language, based on trial and error, as the bots move around a set environment. This is different from how artificial intelligence algorithms typically learn -- using large sets of data, like to recognize a dog by taking in thousands of pictures of dogs. The world the researchers created for the AI bots to learn in is a computer simulation of a simple, two-dimensional white square.
