Talk about the weather, generally considered a neutral topic for conversations, is about to get extremely interesting. January 2020 was the Earth's hottest January in the past 141 years of climate records according to scientists at NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information. Globally, extreme weather and climate disasters pose a threat to public health, economic well-being, and geopolitical stability. Economically, the U.S. has incurred $1.75 trillion in losses since 1980 due to 258 weather and climate disasters according to NOAA figures. Predicting extreme weather is a complex science, and an area where artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning, specifically the pattern-recognition capabilities of deep learning, can make a difference in forecasting accuracy.

The worlds of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity have become deeply entwined in recent years, as organizations work to keep up with -- and ideally block -- increasingly sophisticated malicious hackers. Today, a startup that's built a deep learning solution that it claims can both identify and stop even viruses that have yet to be identified has raised a large round of funding from some big strategic partners. Deep Instinct, which uses deep learning both to learn how to identify and stop known viruses and other hacking techniques, as well as to be able to identify completely new approaches that have not been identified before, has raised $43 million in a Series C. The funding is being led by Millennium New Horizons, with Unbound (a London-based investment firm founded by Shravin Mittal), LG and Nvidia all participating. The investment brings the total raised by Deep Instinct to $100 million, with HP and Samsung among its previous backers. The tech companies are all strategics, in that (as in the case of HP) they bundle and resell Deep Instinct's solutions, or use them directly in their own services. The Israeli-based company is not disclosing valuation, but notably, it is already profitable.

Machine learning implemented for quantum optics
As machine learning continues to surpass human performance in a growing number of tasks, scientists at Skoltech have applied deep learning to reconstruct quantum properties of optical systems. Through a collaboration between the quantum optics research laboratories at Moscow State University, led by Sergey Kulik, and members of Skoltech's Deep Quantum Laboratory of CPQM, led by Jacob Biamonte, the scientists have successfully applied machine learning to the state reconstruction problem. Their findings have been reported in npj Quantum Information, and are the first to show that machine learning can reconstruct quantum states from experimental data in the presence of noise and detector errors. The MSU team generated data with an experimental platform based on spatial states of photons to prepare and measure high-dimensional quantum states. Experimental errors in state preparation and measurements inevitably plague the results and the situation becomes worse with increasing dimensionality.
