DeepMind's AI uncovers structure of 98.5 per cent of human proteins

New Scientist

It took decades of painstaking research to map the structure of just 17 per cent of the proteins used within the human body, but less than a year for UK-based AI company DeepMind to raise that figure to 98.5 per cent. The company is making all this data freely available, which could lead to rapid advances in the development of new drugs. Determining the complex, crumpled shape of proteins based on the sequence of amino acids that make them has been a huge scientific hurdle. Some amino acids are attracted to others, some are repelled by water, and the chains form intricate shapes that are hard to calculate accurately. Understanding these structures enables new, highly targeted drugs to be designed that bind to specific parts of proteins. Genetic research had long provided the ability to determine the sequence of a protein, but an efficient way of finding the shape โ€“ crucial to understanding its properties โ€“ has proven elusive.

DeepMind says it will release the structure of every protein known to science

#artificialintelligence

Back in December 2020, DeepMind took the world of biology by surprise when it solved a 50-year grand challenge with AlphaFold, an AI tool that predicts the structure of proteins. Last week the London-based company published full details of that tool and released its source code. Now the firm has announced that it has used its AI to predict the shapes of nearly every protein in the human body, as well as the shapes of hundreds of thousands of other proteins found in 20 of the most widely studied organisms, including yeast, the fruit fly, and the mouse. The breakthrough could allow biologists from around the world to understand diseases better and develop new drugs. So far the trove consists of 350,000 newly predicted protein structures.

What Are The Three Domains of Artificial Intelligence?

#artificialintelligence

Real artificial intelligence (AI) is all about reality and causality, and how it is reflected in digital mentality and cyberspace or virtuality. There are two classes of Machine Intelligence, Non-Real AI and Real AI. Non-Real AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and act like humans. The Real AI is all about reality, mentality and causality, and how it is reflected as digital mentality, or machine intelligence, in cyberspace or virtuality, or mixed reality. Virtuality (Digital Data Universe/Virtual World/Mixed Reality; cybernetics, computer science, AI, ML, DL, data science, data analytics, information engineering).

DeepMind open-sources protein structure dataset generated by AlphaFold 2

#artificialintelligence

All the sessions from Transform 2021 are available on-demand now. DeepMind and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL), a life sciences lab based in Hinxton, England, today announced the launch of what they claim is the most complete and accurate database of structures for proteins expressed by the human genome. In a joint press conference hosted by the journal Nature, the two organizations said that the database, the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database, which was created using DeepMind's AlphaFold 2 system, will be made available to the scientific community in the coming weeks. The recipe for proteins -- large molecules consisting of amino acids that are the fundamental building blocks of tissues, muscles, hair, enzymes, antibodies, and other essential parts of living organisms -- are encoded in DNA. It's these genetic definitions that circumscribe their three-dimensional structures, which in turn determine their capabilities.

AI firm DeepMind puts database of the building blocks of life online

The Guardian

Last year the artificial intelligence group DeepMind cracked a mystery that has flummoxed scientists for decades: stripping bare the structure of proteins, the building blocks of life. Now, having amassed a database of nearly all human protein structures, the company is making the resource available online free for researchers to use. The key to understanding our basic biological machinery is its architecture. The chains of amino acids that comprise proteins twist and turn to make the most confounding of 3D shapes. It is this elaborate form that explains protein function; from enzymes that are crucial to metabolism to antibodies that fight infectious attacks.

Ophthalmology: A pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Ophthalmology, with its heavy reliance on imaging, is an innovator in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine. Although the opportunities for patients and health care professionals are great, hurdles to fully integrating AI remain, including economic, ethical, and data-privacy issues. Deep learning According to Konstantinos Balaskas, MD, FEBO, MRCOphth, a retinal expert at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, United Kingdom, and director of the Moorfields Ophthalmic Reading Centre and AI Analytics Hub, AI is a broad term. "The type of AI that has generated a lot of excitement in recent years is called'deep learning,' " he said. "This is a process by which software programs learn to perform certain tasks by processing large quantities of data." Deep learning is what has made ophthalmology a pioneer in the field of implementing AI in medicine, because we are increasingly reliant on imaging tests to monitor our patients.

5 Best Programming Languages for AI

#artificialintelligence

You might ask yourself questions such as what is the fastest path to a career in AI, or what is the best programming language for AI? The answer to these questions will depend on your knowledge and experience, the type of AI project you are interested in, and current industry trends. There is currently no dedicated AI language dedicated to this area of technology, but it does support many popular programming languages. However, in order to increase your chances of quickly launching a career in AI, you need to learn AI programming languages that are supported by several machine learning (ML) and deep learning libraries. For AI programming languages, Python is leading the way with its unparalleled community support and pre-built libraries that help accelerate AI development.

Deep Neural Networks Learn by Using Human-Selected ECG Features and Novel Features

#artificialintelligence

We sought to investigate whether artificial intelligence (AI) and specifically deep neural networks for electrocardiogram (ECG) signal analysis can be explained using human selected features. We also sought to quantify such explainability and test if the AI model learns features that are similar to a human expert. We used a set of 100,000 ECGs that were annotated by human explainable features. We applied both linear and nonlinear models to predict published ECG AI models output for the detection of patients' age and sex. We further used canonical correlation analysis to quantify the amount of shared information between the features found in an unsupervised way.
