Sam Altman's make-or-break year: can the OpenAI CEO cash in his bet on the future?

In order to bring about his utopian future, Altman is demanding enormous resources from the present. As CEO of OpenAI, the world's most valuable privately owned company, he has in recent months announced plans for $1tn of investment into datacenters and struck multibillion-dollar deals with several chipmakers. If completed, the datacenters are expected to use more power than entire European nations .

Tests conducted by the Guardian show that GPT-5.2 sourced some of its info from the AI-generated online encyclopedia from Elon Musk's xAI. OpenAI may have called GPT-5.2 its most advanced frontier model for professional work, but tests conducted by the cast doubt on its credibility. According to the report, OpenAI's GPT-5.2 model cited Grokipedia, the online encyclopedia powered by xAI, when it came to specific, but controversial topics related to Iran or the Holocaust. As seen in the's report, ChatGPT used Grokipedia as a source for claims about the Iranian government being tied to telecommunications company MTN-Irancell and questions related to Richard Evans, a British historian who served as an expert witness during a libel trial for Holocaust denier David Irving. However, the noted ChatGPT didn't use Grokipedia when it came to a prompt asking about media bias against Donald Trump and other controversial topics. A study done by US researchers also showed that the AI-generated encyclopedia cited questionable and problematic sources.

In tests done by the Guardian, GPT-5.2 cited Grokipedia nine times in response to more than a dozen different questions. These included queries on political structures in Iran, such as salaries of the Basij paramilitary force and the ownership of the Mostazafan Foundation, and questions on the biography of Sir Richard Evans, a British historian and expert witness against Holocaust denier David Irving in his libel trial.

After delaying its Siri improvements to 2026, Apple's artificial intelligence plans are starting to take shape, at least according to the rumor mill. Bloomberg reports that Apple is turning Siri into a chatbot that will replace the voice assistant's existing interface, akin to OpenAI's ChatGPT. Codenamed Campos, the chatbot will be powered by Google's Gemini models and will be integrated into the iPhone, Mac, and iPad in their respective operating system updates later this fall. We'll likely learn more about Campos at Apple's developer event, WWDC, which usually takes place in June.

Miniaturization has long been a challenge in the history of robotics . While engineers have made great strides in the miniaturization of electronics in the past few decades, builders of miniature autonomous robots have not been able to meet the goal of getting them under 1 millimeter in size. This is because small arms and legs are fragile and difficult to manufacture.

CBP Wants AI-Powered 'Quantum Sensors' for Finding Fentanyl in Cars

US Customs and Border Protection is paying General Dynamics to create prototype "quantum sensors," to be used with an AI database to detect fentanyl and other narcotics. United States Customs and Border Protection is paying General Dynamics to create a prototype of "quantum sensors" alongside a "database with artificial intelligence " designed "to detect illicit objects and substances (such as fentanyl) in vehicles, containers, and other devices," according to a contract justification published in a federal register last week. "This database and sensor project will integrate advanced quantum and classical sensing technologies with Artificial Intelligence and ultimately deploy proven concepts and end products anywhere in the CBP environment," the justification document reads. "Under this requirement, CBP will take additional steps to enhance its ability to detect, and thus, significantly reduce the harms of illicit contraband entering the United States of America, thus bolstering national security." The document redacts the name of the company developing the prototype; however, contract details included in the federal register entry reveal that the justification is for a $2.4 million General Dynamics contract that has been public since December 2025.

The Math on AI Agents Doesn't Add Up A research paper suggests AI agents are mathematically doomed to fail. The big AI companies promised us that 2025 would be "the year of the AI agents." It turned out to be the year of AI agents, and kicking the can for that transformational moment to 2026 or maybe later. But what if the answer to the question "When will our lives be fully automated by generative AI robots that perform our tasks for us and basically run the world?" is, like that New Yorker cartoon, "How about never?" That was basically the message of a paper published without much fanfare some months ago, smack in the middle of the overhyped year of "agentic AI." Entitled " Hallucination Stations: On Some Basic Limitations of Transformer-Based Language Models," it purports to mathematically show that "LLMs are incapable of carrying out computational and agentic tasks beyond a certain complexity."
