The three categories of awards at NeurIPS 2022 were these: outstanding main track papers, outstanding datasets and benchmark track papers, and the test of time paper. It has released two papers, on providing unique lighting approaches and on 3D model creation, following up on its work in 3D and generative AI. "NeurIPS is a major conference in machine learning, and we see high value in participating in the show among other leaders in the field. We showcased 60 research projects at the conference and were proud to have two papers honored with NeurIPS 2022 Awards for their contributions to machine learning," Sanja Fidler, VP of AI research at Nvidia and a writer on both the 3D MoMa and GET3D papers, told VentureBeat.

Two groups have announced powerful new generative models that can design new proteins on demand not seen in nature. The explosion in text-to-image AI models like OpenAI's DALL-E 2--programs trained to generate pictures of almost anything you ask for--has sent ripples through the creative industries, from fashion to filmmaking, by providing weird and wonderful images on demand. The same technology behind these programs is also making a splash in biotech labs, which are increasingly using this type of generative AI, known as a diffusion model, to conjure up designs for new types of protein never seen in nature. Today, two labs separately announced programs that use diffusion models to generate designs for novel proteins with more precision than ever before. Generate Biomedicines, a Boston-based startup, revealed a program called Chroma, which the company describes as the "DALL-E 2 of biology."

It seems fitting, therefore, that the application is closing out the year with its institutional debut at the Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida--its name was, after all, partly inspired by the eccentric Spanish painter. "The Shape of Dreams" is a fresh exploration of a topic that has long fascinated artists, especially Dalí and his fellow Surrealists. The paintings on show trace how dreams have inspired painters for some 500 years, from Italian Baroque artists like Lodovico Carracci and Luca Giordano to 20th century figures such as Max Beckmann, Paul Delvaux, and Frida Kahlo.

In 2013, researchers at Oxford published an analysis of the jobs most likely to be threatened by automation and artificial intelligence. At the top of the list were occupations such as telemarketing, hand sewing, and brokerage clerking. These and other at-risk jobs involved doing repetitive and unimaginative work, which seemed to make them easy pickings for AI.

Generative AI and LLMs were two of the hottest topics at NeurIPS 2022, which brought the AI and ML community back in-person for the first time since 2019 and has offered "a lot of excitement," said Alice Oh, professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and the conference's lead program chair. Some of that excitement may have been the sound of thousands of keyboards trying out OpenAI's ChatGPT demo, which was released on Wednesday and has been the talk of Twitter, if not NeurIPS, since then. But the Conference and Workshop on Neural Information Processing Systems, a machine learning and computational neuroscience conference held every December, this year in New Orleans, certainly had plenty of its own buzz going on. According to conference leaders, over 10,000 were in attendance in person, with another 3,000 tuning in online.
