Microsoft on Monday announced a new multiyear, multibillion-dollar investment with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI. Microsoft declined to provide a specific dollar amount, but Semafor reported earlier this month that Microsoft was in talks to invest as much as $10 billion. The deal marks the third phase of the partnership between the two companies, following Microsoft's previous investments in 2019 and 2021. Microsoft said the renewed partnership will accelerate breakthroughs in AI and help both companies commercialize advanced technologies in the future. "We formed our partnership with OpenAI around a shared ambition to responsibly advance cutting-edge AI research and democratize AI as a new technology platform," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a blog post.

According to reporting from Reuters, OpenAI's ChatGPT is now the fastest-growing app in human history, reaching an estimated 100 million active monthly users in just the two months since its November release. "In 20 years following the internet space," UBS analysts reportedly wrote in a note to Reuters, citing a report from web traffic analytics firm SimilarWeb, "we cannot recall a faster ramp in a consumer internet app." Per that report, an average of roughly 13 million unique visitors were using ChatGPT per day in January -- a jaw-dropping figure, and double the average number of individual users that were using the tech each day in December. To say this thing has taken off like wildfire hardly cuts it, and VCs have paid attention. Of course, comparing ChatGPT, certainly the newest Silicon Valley darling, to established SV behemoths like Google, Apple, or Meta isn't totally fair, considering the role that social media in particular has played in ChatGPT's exponential success.

Though others have interviewed ChatGPT, I had some anxiety-riddled questions of my own: Will you take my job? Is the singularity upon us? These questions are half facetious, half serious. A never-ending spoof of Seinfeld generated by AI has attracted nearly 171,000 followers on Twitch. The stream, which first aired on December 14, has been playing non-stop ever since and is almost entirely generated by algorithms. It's titled Nothing, Forever, a reference to the '90s sitcom being the so-called "show about nothing." Created by Skyler Hartle and Brian Habersberger, the show uses a combination of machine learning, generative algorithms and cloud services to create a Seinfeld parody, using OpenAI's GPT-3 language model. Nothing, Forever features animated versions of the main Seinfeld cast, including Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer, but with dialogue that often doesn't make sense, characters who wander off aimlessly, and a badly-timed laugh track. Speaking about the project to Vice, Hartle said: "The actual impetus for this was it originally started its life as this weird, very, off-center kind of nonsensical, surreal art project.
