Double Q-Learning for Citizen Relocation During Natural Hazards

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Abstract--Natural disasters can cause substantial negative socio-economic impacts around the world, due to mortality, relocation, rates, and reconstruction decisions. Robotics has been successfully applied to identify and rescue victims during the occurrence of a natural hazard. However, little effort has been taken to deploy solutions where an autonomous robot can save the life of a citizen by itself relocating it, without the need to wait for a rescue team composed of humans. Reinforcement learning approaches can be used to deploy such a solution, however, one of the most famous algorithms to deploy it, the Q-learning, suffers from biased results generated when performing its learning routines. In this research a solution for citizen relocation based on Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes is adopted, where the capability of the Double Q-learning in relocating citizens during a natural hazard is evaluated under a proposed hazard simulation engine based on a grid world. The performance of the solution was measured as a success rate of a citizen relocation procedure, where the results show that the technique portrays a performance above 100% for easy scenarios and near 50% for hard ones.

Public Reaction to Scientific Research via Twitter Sentiment Prediction

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Social media platforms have become a place where users collaborate, share their ideas and also have conflicts (Hansson et al., 2019; Hansson and Ludwig, 2019). With 126 million active daily users (Shaban, 2019), Twitter is the dominant microblogging platform on which users discuss a breadth of subjects and even play a role in influencing current trends. Users on Twitter post short and often informal messages (tweets) in which they share information and project opinions and sentiments about what is going on in the world. Twitter has been a major platform for sharing scholarly articles, and many researchers have used it to develop various metrics for scholarly articles (Haustein, 2019). Other social media platforms like Facebook and Weibo have also been sources to study online users' responses (Kou et al., 2017). Social media platforms have become a hub where users express their opinions and emotions related to multiple fields of interest (Chatterjee et al., 2019). Researchers have studied the sentiments and emotions associated with research articles on these platforms (Freeman et al., 2019, 2020).

Analyzing Wearables Dataset to Predict ADLs and Falls: A Pilot Study

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Healthcare is an important aspect of human life. Use of technologies in healthcare has increased manifolds after the pandemic. Internet of Things based systems and devices proposed in literature can help elders, children and adults facing/experiencing health problems. This paper exhaustively reviews thirty-nine wearable based datasets which can be used for evaluating the system to recognize Activities of Daily Living and Falls. A comparative analysis on the SisFall dataset using five machine learning methods i.e., Logistic Regression, Linear Discriminant Analysis, K-Nearest Neighbor, Decision Tree and Naive Bayes is performed in python. The dataset is modified in two ways, in first all the attributes present in dataset are used as it is and labelled in binary form. In second, magnitude of three axes(x,y,z) for three sensors value are computed and then used in experiment with label attribute. The experiments are performed on one subject, ten subjects and all the subjects and compared in terms of accuracy, precision and recall. The results obtained from this study proves that KNN outperforms other machine learning methods in terms of accuracy, precision and recall. It is also concluded that personalization of data improves accuracy.

Partial Observability during DRL for Robot Control

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has made tremendous advances in both simulated and real-world robot control tasks in recent years. Nevertheless, applying DRL to novel robot control tasks is still challenging, especially when researchers have to design the action and observation space and the reward function. In this paper, we investigate partial observability as a potential failure source of applying DRL to robot control tasks, which can occur when researchers are not confident whether the observation space fully represents the underlying state. We compare the performance of three common DRL algorithms, TD3, SAC and PPO under various partial observability conditions. We find that TD3 and SAC become easily stuck in local optima and underperform PPO. We propose multi-step versions of the vanilla TD3 and SAC to improve robustness to partial observability based on one-step bootstrapping.

Learning Consumer Preferences from Bundle Sales Data

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Product bundling is a common selling mechanism used in online retailing. To set profitable bundle prices, the seller needs to learn consumer preferences from the transaction data. When customers purchase bundles or multiple products, classical methods such as discrete choice models cannot be used to estimate customers' valuations. In this paper, we propose an approach to learn the distribution of consumers' valuations toward the products using bundle sales data. The approach reduces it to an estimation problem where the samples are censored by polyhedral regions. Using the EM algorithm and Monte Carlo simulation, our approach can recover the distribution of consumers' valuations. The framework allows for unobserved no-purchases and clustered market segments. We provide theoretical results on the identifiability of the probability model and the convergence of the EM algorithm. The performance of the approach is also demonstrated numerically.

Inferring Articulated Rigid Body Dynamics from RGBD Video

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Being able to reproduce physical phenomena ranging from light interaction to contact mechanics, simulators are becoming increasingly useful in more and more application domains where real-world interaction or labeled data are difficult to obtain. Despite recent progress, significant human effort is needed to configure simulators to accurately reproduce real-world behavior. We introduce a pipeline that combines inverse rendering with differentiable simulation to create digital twins of real-world articulated mechanisms from depth or RGB videos. Our approach automatically discovers joint types and estimates their kinematic parameters, while the dynamic properties of the overall mechanism are tuned to attain physically accurate simulations. Control policies optimized in our derived simulation transfer successfully back to the original system, as we demonstrate on a simulated system. Further, our approach accurately reconstructs the kinematic tree of an articulated mechanism being manipulated by a robot, and highly nonlinear dynamics of a real-world coupled pendulum mechanism. Machine learning is the technique that enables a machine to learn from data, improve performance from experiences and predict things without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning is a specialized technology that comes under Artificial Intelligence and it also includes self-driving cars, image recognition, and speech recognition. It is different from traditional programming, In machine learning when we pass data and output as the input it creates the model and gives the desired algorithm. Supervised Learning is a machine learning technique that can only process the labeled data. The model can be created by labeled data to know the datasets and to know about each data while training the model.

Examining stability of machine learning methods for predicting dementia at early phases of the disease

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Dementia is a neuropsychiatric brain disorder that usually occurs when one or more brain cells stop working partially or at all. Diagnosis of this disorder in the early phases of the disease is a vital task to rescue patients lives from bad consequences and provide them with better healthcare. Machine learning methods have been proven to be accurate in predicting dementia in the early phases of the disease. The prediction of dementia depends heavily on the type of collected data which usually are gathered from Normalized Whole Brain Volume (nWBV) and Atlas Scaling Factor (ASF) which are normally measured and corrected from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRIs). Other biological features such as age and gender can also help in the diagnosis of dementia. Although many studies use machine learning for predicting dementia, we could not reach a conclusion on the stability of these methods for which one is more accurate under different experimental conditions. Therefore, this paper investigates the conclusion stability regarding the performance of machine learning algorithms for dementia prediction. To accomplish this, a large number of experiments were run using 7 machine learning algorithms and two feature reduction algorithms namely, Information Gain (IG) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). To examine the stability of these algorithms, thresholds of feature selection were changed for the IG from 20% to 100% and the PCA dimension from 2 to 8. This has resulted in 7x9 + 7x7= 112 experiments. In each experiment, various classification evaluation data were recorded. The obtained results show that among seven algorithms the support vector machine and Naive Bayes are the most stable algorithms while changing the selection threshold. Also, it was found that using IG would seem more efficient than using PCA for predicting Dementia.

Social-Implicit: Rethinking Trajectory Prediction Evaluation and The Effectiveness of Implicit Maximum Likelihood Estimation

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Best-of-N (BoN) Average Displacement Error (ADE)/ Final Displacement Error (FDE) is the most used metric for evaluating trajectory prediction models. Yet, the BoN does not quantify the whole generated samples, resulting in an incomplete view of the model's prediction quality and performance. We propose a new metric, Average Mahalanobis Distance (AMD) to tackle this issue. AMD is a metric that quantifies how close the whole generated samples are to the ground truth. We also introduce the Average Maximum Eigenvalue (AMV) metric that quantifies the overall spread of the predictions. Our metrics are validated empirically by showing that the ADE/FDE is not sensitive to distribution shifts, giving a biased sense of accuracy, unlike the AMD/AMV metrics. We introduce the usage of Implicit Maximum Likelihood Estimation (IMLE) as a replacement for traditional generative models to train our model, Social-Implicit. IMLE training mechanism aligns with AMD/AMV objective of predicting trajectories that are close to the ground truth with a tight spread. Social-Implicit is a memory efficient deep model with only 5.8K parameters that runs in real time of about 580Hz and achieves competitive results.
