Adding Context to Concept Trees

Concept Trees are a type of database that can organise arbitrary textual information using a very simple rule. Each tree tries to represent a single cohesive concept and the trees can link with each other for navigation and semantic purposes. The trees are therefore a type of semantic network and would benefit from having a consistent level of context for each of the nodes. The Concept Tree nodes have a mathematical basis allowing for a consistent build process. These would represent nouns or verbs in a text sentence, for example. New to the design can then be lists of descriptive elements for each of the nodes. The descriptors can also be weighted, but do not have to follow the strict counting rule of the tree nodes. With the new descriptive layers, a much richer type of knowledge can be achieved and still reasoned over automatically. The linking structure of the licas network is very relevant to building the concept trees now and forms the basis for their construction. The concept tree - symbolic neural network relation is also extended further.

Uniform Random Generation and Dominance Testing for CP-Nets

The generation of preferences represented as CP-nets for experiments and empirical testing has typically been done in an ad hoc manner that may have introduced a large statistical bias in previous experimental work. We present novel polynomial-time algorithms for generating CP-nets with n nodes and maximum in-degree c uniformly at random. We extend this result to several statistical cultures commonly used in the social choice and preference reasoning literature. A CP-net is composed of both a graph and underlying cp-statements; our algorithm is the first to provably generate both the graph structure and cp-statements, and hence the underlying preference orders themselves, uniformly at random. We have released this code as a free and open source project. We use the uniform generation algorithm to investigate the maximum and expected flipping lengths, i.e., the maximum length over all outcomes o and o', of a minimal proof that o is preferred to o'. Using our new statistical evidence, we conjecture that, for CP-nets with binary variables and complete conditional preference tables, the expected flipping length is polynomial in the number of preference variables. This has positive implications for the usability of CP-nets as compact preference models.


Logical Formalizations of Commonsense Reasoning: A Survey

Commonsense reasoning is in principle a central problem in artificial intelligence, but it is a very difficult one. One approach that has been pursued since the earliest days of the field has been to encode commonsense knowledge as statements in a logic-based representation language and to implement commonsense reasoning as some form of logical inference. This paper surveys the use of logic-based representations of commonsense knowledge in artificial intelligence research.


Two provably consistent divide and conquer clustering algorithms for large networks

In this article, we advance divide-and-conquer strategies for solving the community detection problem in networks. We propose two algorithms which perform clustering on a number of small subgraphs and finally patches the results into a single clustering. The main advantage of these algorithms is that they bring down significantly the computational cost of traditional algorithms, including spectral clustering, semi-definite programs, modularity based methods, likelihood based methods etc., without losing on accuracy and even improving accuracy at times. These algorithms are also, by nature, parallelizable. Thus, exploiting the facts that most traditional algorithms are accurate and the corresponding optimization problems are much simpler in small problems, our divide-and-conquer methods provide an omnibus recipe for scaling traditional algorithms up to large networks. We prove consistency of these algorithms under various subgraph selection procedures and perform extensive simulations and real-data analysis to understand the advantages of the divide-and-conquer approach in various settings.


Ontological Multidimensional Data Models and Contextual Data Qality

Data quality assessment and data cleaning are context-dependent activities. Motivated by this observation, we propose the Ontological Multidimensional Data Model (OMD model), which can be used to model and represent contexts as logic-based ontologies. The data under assessment is mapped into the context, for additional analysis, processing, and quality data extraction. The resulting contexts allow for the representation of dimensions, and multidimensional data quality assessment becomes possible. At the core of a multidimensional context we include a generalized multidimensional data model and a Datalog+/- ontology with provably good properties in terms of query answering. These main components are used to represent dimension hierarchies, dimensional constraints, dimensional rules, and define predicates for quality data specification. Query answering relies upon and triggers navigation through dimension hierarchies, and becomes the basic tool for the extraction of quality data. The OMD model is interesting per se, beyond applications to data quality. It allows for a logic-based, and computationally tractable representation of multidimensional data, extending previous multidimensional data models with additional expressive power and functionalities.

Spacetimes with Semantics (III) - The Structure of Functional Knowledge Representation and Artificial Reasoning

Using the previously developed concepts of semantic spacetime, I explore the interpretation of knowledge representations, and their structure, as a semantic system, within the framework of promise theory. By assigning interpretations to phenomena, from observers to observed, we may approach a simple description of knowledge-based functional systems, with direct practical utility. The focus is especially on the interpretation of concepts, associative knowledge, and context awareness. The inference seems to be that most if not all of these concepts emerge from purely semantic spacetime properties, which opens the possibility for a more generalized understanding of what constitutes a learning, or even `intelligent' system. Some key principles emerge for effective knowledge representation: 1) separation of spacetime scales, 2) the recurrence of four irreducible types of association, by which intent propagates: aggregation, causation, cooperation, and similarity, 3) the need for discrimination of identities (discrete), which is assisted by distinguishing timeline simultaneity from sequential events, and 4) the ability to learn (memory). It is at least plausible that emergent knowledge abstraction capabilities have their origin in basic spacetime structures. These notes present a unified view of mostly well-known results; they allow us to see information models, knowledge representations, machine learning, and semantic networking (transport and information base) in a common framework. The notion of `smart spaces' thus encompasses artificial systems as well as living systems, across many different scales, e.g. smart cities and organizations.


Physical problem solving: Joint planning with symbolic, geometric, and dynamic constraints

In this paper, we present a new task that investigates how people interact with and make judgments about towers of blocks. In Experiment~1, participants in the lab solved a series of problems in which they had to re-configure three blocks from an initial to a final configuration. We recorded whether they used one hand or two hands to do so. In Experiment~2, we asked participants online to judge whether they think the person in the lab used one or two hands. The results revealed a close correspondence between participants' actions in the lab, and the mental simulations of participants online. To explain participants' actions and mental simulations, we develop a model that plans over a symbolic representation of the situation, executes the plan using a geometric solver, and checks the plan's feasibility by taking into account the physical constraints of the scene. Our model explains participants' actions and judgments to a high degree of quantitative accuracy.


Using Thought-Provoking Children's Questions to Drive Artificial Intelligence Research

We propose to use thought-provoking children's questions (TPCQs), namely Highlights BrainPlay questions, as a new method to drive artificial intelligence research and to evaluate the capabilities of general-purpose AI systems. These questions are designed to stimulate thought and learning in children, and they can be used to do the same thing in AI systems, while demonstrating the system's reasoning capabilities to the evaluator. We introduce the TPCQ task, which which takes a TPCQ question as input and produces as output (1) answers to the question and (2) learned generalizations. We discuss how BrainPlay questions stimulate learning. We analyze 244 BrainPlay questions, and we report statistics on question type, question class, answer cardinality, answer class, types of knowledge needed, and types of reasoning needed. We find that BrainPlay questions span many aspects of intelligence. Because the answers to BrainPlay questions and the generalizations learned from them are often highly open-ended, we suggest using human judges for evaluation.
