The opening of those stores depend on the success of test locations, sources told the Journal . The first store, which is roughly 1,800 square feet, is in Seattle. The retail space is currently open to Amazon employees as part of the beta program, and will open to the public in early 2017. Amazon is developing two other store formats, sources revealed.

Microsoft is taking another shot at giving users a friendly AI-driven bot conversation partner. On Monday, the company released Zo, a chatbot that users can converse with on Kik, the popular messaging platform. Zo is a follow-up to Tay, the tech giant's first foray into friendly, English-speaking chatbots. It's clear that the company has learned from its first attempt, when the friendly chatbot was turned into a font of white supremacist propaganda by malicious users. In contrast, Zo adamantly refuses to discuss political matters.

Andrew Greenstein, an app developer from San Francisco, started journaling a few months ago. He tries to write for five minutes every day, but it's challenging to set aside the time. Still, he's read that journaling reduces stress and can help with goal-setting, so he's trying to make it a habit. At the Disrupt London Hackathon, Greenstein and his team built The Emotion Journal, a voice journaling app that performs real-time emotional analysis to detect the user's feelings and chart their emotional state over time. By day, Greenstein is the CEO of SF AppWorks, a digital agency.

Back in early 2015, Google's mysterious DeepMind unveiled an algorithm that could teach itself to play Atari games. Based on deep neural nets, the AI impressively mastered nostalgic favorites such as Space Invaders and Pong without needing any explicit programming -- it simply learned through millions of examples. But the algorithm had a weakness: memory. Without a memory module, it couldn't store away any information it had already mastered. When faced with problems requiring multi-step reasoning, the algorithm faltered.

Smoking cigarettes is the leading cause of lung cancer, the most common cause of cancer death in the world. But nearly 20 percent of lung-cancer diagnoses are made in people who are non-smokers. That means in addition to smoking, geographic, demographic and genetic factors play a role in the devastating disease. A project from Microsoft's research labs is exploring the feasibility of using anonymized web search data to learn more about lung-cancer risk factors and provide early warning to people who are candidates for disease screening. The findings, published Thursday in JAMA Oncology, extend research that team members published last June on the feasibility of using the text of questions people ask search engines to predict diagnoses of pancreatic cancer.

Nevertheless, having announced the recent close of a $4.42 million Series A funding round, Luka's creators are more than optimistic about the app's future.
