Why we need to plan for a future without jobs
The future of work in America is uncertain. What we know is that things are going to change. Technology will upend countless careers, workers across fields will be displaced, and it's not entirely clear how many jobs will be replaced. When driverless trucks are manufactured at scale, which will happen far sooner than many realize (as soon as five years), America's 3.5 million truck drivers will be suddenly dispensable. That doesn't mean that the profession of truck driving will disappear overnight, but it will shrink considerably.
Honeypot Turing Test
Honeypot design and deployment is a tradeoff between realism and simplicity; this tradeoff can be characterized as the difference between high and low interaction honeypots. A realistic design could use an actual operating system instrumented to detect and capture intruders (known as a high interaction honeypot). However, the detection would be greatly complicated, because it is difficult to distinguish between normal traffic on the system and the attacker's. It is a low signal to noise detection problem due to the complexity of modern operating systems running hundreds of threads generating large volumes of traffic with complex signatures. A honeypot that is designed only to superficially mimic an OS (low interaction honeypot) can easily detect the attacker's actions, since there is no background noise.
The game that makes drone warfare personal
Four people were killed, including two children. "We were looking into all these different stories, like the psychology of the drone pilot, all the crazy, messed-up stuff that surrounds it," says Killbox programmer Albert Elwin on the IndieCade show floor in Los Angeles. "It's all really dark and depressing -- it's absolutely in some ways a difficult project to work on because you get kind of consumed by the reality of it." Since 2004, the US has conducted more than 400 drone strikes across Pakistan alone that have killed up to 4,000 people, according to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. Hard statistics don't exist in the world of UAV warfare, but the Bureau estimates between 423 and 965 civilians have been killed in unmanned strikes on Pakistan, including as many as 207 children.
Tesla ordered to stop advertising 'autopilot' function
Tesla has reportedly been told to stop advertising an "autopilot" function on its cars after the term was deemed to be misleading. German transport regulator KBA wrote to the company after the feature came under scrutiny following two fatal crashes. Questions have been raised over the system after fatal crashes in northern China and Florida. There was also an incident in Germany in which a Tesla electric car crashed into a tourist bus while on autopilot. "In order to prevent misunderstandings and false expectations from clients, we are asking that the misleading term'Autopilot' no longer be used in advertisements for the system," KBA said, according to the Local.
Welcome to a world without work Ryan Avent
A new age is dawning. Whether it is a wonderful one or a terrible one remains to be seen. Look around and the signs of dizzying technological progress are difficult to miss. Driverless cars and drones, not long ago the stuff of science fiction, are now oddities that can occasionally be spotted in the wild and which will soon be a commonplace in cities around the world. With a few flicks of a finger, we can use our phones to order up a meal, or a car, or a translation for a waiter's query in a foreign country. Gadgets such as the Amazon Echo are finding their way into living rooms, where they sit listening, ready to comply with a voice command. Just a few years ago, one could dismiss the digital age as consisting of little more than social networks and cat videos; no longer.
7 Machine Learning Algorithms You Should Know Of
A machine learning algorithm is used in many ways to identify incorrect or correct data that is fed into the system. It is first given some sort of a "teaching set" of data, which is then used to answer a question. As more and more questions are asked, this new information is added to the algorithm making it smarter and better at performing its task over time. So one can say that these machines are "learning." Here are seven of the most common uses of this technology. A lot of people want to find out what will happen to the stock market ahead of time.
Fighting Malevolent Artificial Intelligence
With the appearance of robotic financial advisers, self-driving cars and personal digital assistants come many unresolved problems. We have already experienced market crashes caused by intelligent trading software, accidents caused by self-driving cars and hate speech from chat-bots that turned racist. Today's narrowly focused artificial intelligence (AI) systems are good only at specific assigned tasks. Their failures are just a warning: Once humans develop general AI capable of accomplishing a much wider range of tasks, expressions of prejudice will be the least of our concerns. It is not easy to make a machine that can perceive, learn and synthesize information to accomplish a set of tasks.
Civic Hall, XPRIZE & NYAI present: A.I. For Good
CJ Adams is a product manager at Jigsaw, a subsidiary of Google's parent company Alphabet. Jigsaw uses machine learning to detect abusive language, threats, and harassment. The company is studying how computers can learn to understand the nuances and context of abusive language at scale. If successful, machine learning could help publishers and moderators improve comments on their platforms and enhance the exchange of ideas on the internet. Before joining Google, Adams worked with the Polaris Project, where he designed and built new tools for combating organized criminal networks - improving the flow of information between victims, service providers, and law enforcement officers in thousands of human trafficking cases each year.
5 Intriguing Uses for Artificial Intelligence (That Aren't Killer Robots)
Rather than leading to the violent downfall of humankind, artificial intelligence is helping people around the world do their jobs, including doctors who diagnose sepsis in patients and scientists who track endangered animals in the wild, experts said Thursday (Oct. Advancements in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) haven't always been met with enthusiasm. Famed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking warned on several occasions that a fully developed AI could destroy the human race, and Hollywood sci-fi movies are rife with fierce robots battling humans for control. But at yesterday's conference -- attended by the country's leading researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs and students -- scientists explained how newly developed AI is accelerating research and improving lives. Here is a look at five AI inventions that are already redefining technology.
